Two dogs can carry the exact same diagnosis and need completely different food.

This is the piece that gets lost every time nutrition advice is handed out as a universal protocol.

In Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine, every ingredient carries a thermal nature.

Lamb, venison, and chicken warm the body.

Rabbit, cod, duck, and turkey cool it.

Celery, asparagus, cucumber, and mung beans clear heat.

Seaweed and mushrooms soften and resolve accumulation.

Turmeric and sardines move Blood.

Ayurveda works through the same lens of balance.

Heat is met with cooling and bitter.

Heaviness is met with light and warming.

Dryness is met with nourishing, unctuous food.

So the real question is never "what is the best cancer diet."

The question is: Who is standing in front of you.

A dog seeking out cold tile, panting at rest, withred inflamed skin needs a different bowl than the dog who is thin, cold to the touch, weak, and losing muscle.

Feed warming food to a hot dog and you make
them worse.

Feed cooling food to a depleted dog and you make them worse.

Your first five steps, in this order:

1. Move off ultra-processed food and onto fresh, lightly cooked whole food

2. Drop the starch load

3. Add omega-3s daily

4. Support digestion before you add anything else

5. Match the energetics of the food to the dog you actually have

That's your foundation.

Supplements, herbs, and mushrooms get layered in after as needed, but not as a replacement.

None of this replaces your veterinary oncology team, but as complementary support.

This is the work I do inside Nacho's Path, my 12-week canine cancer support program.

If your dog was recently diagnosed and you have no idea where to begin, I would love to have a conversation with you.

Around 70% of your dog's immune tissue lives in the gut wall.

Feed the gut well and you are feeding the immune system directly, which is why I never treat the two as separate projects.

Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine puts the Spleen at the center of this work.

The Spleen governs transformation and transportation, taking food and converting it into Qi and Blood.

When Spleen Qi is deficient, which it almost always is in a dog moving through cancer treatment, food doesn’t convert well.

Damp accumulates instead.

Damp thickens into Phlegm.

The same cycle that fed the original accumulation keeps right on running.

Ayurveda names that same fire agni.

Strong agni digests food completely and builds ojas, the refined reserve Ayurvedic medicine considers the seat of immunity and resilience.

Weak agni produces ama instead, and no amount of expensive, high-quality food will help a dog who cannot digest it.

Both systems land on the same practical instruction: make the food easy to digest before you make it impressive.

What that looks like in the bowl:

- Gently cooked, warm food rather than cold or heavily raw during active treatment. I use a slow cooker method for nearly every oncology case.

- Highly digestible protein at every meal, adequate and consistent, because muscle loss is a real risk in these dogs

- Bone broth for gut integrity and mineral support

- Medicinal mushrooms, which carry both immune-modulating research and a long TCVM history of resolving Phlegm

- Warming digestive spices in small, dog-appropriate amounts: ginger, turmeric, fennel, cumin

- Smaller, more frequent meals when appetite is fragile

Part 3 of 4. The last one ties it together and tells you where to start tomorrow morning.

A tumor doesn't appear in a body that was doing fine the day before.

It grows in a body that has been managing inflammation for a long time, and once you know what has been generating that inflammation, you know where your leverage is.

Most of it has been arriving twice a day in the bowl.

Ultra-processed food cooked at extreme heat carries oxidative damage and advanced glycation end products into the body at every meal, which is a small insult on any given day and a considerable one across years.

Heavy starch loads keep blood sugar and insulin elevated, which is not a neutral state for a body already under strain.

Most commercial diets also run heavily toward omega-6 relative to omega-3, and that ratio is one of the main switches controlling whether inflammatory pathways stay running or settle down.

Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine has been describing where this leads for centuries.

Qi stops circulating freely, Blood slows behind it, Damp collects because the body can no longer move fluids the way it should, and Damp eventually thickens into Phlegm.

That progression is not metaphorical to a TCVM practitioner, because it describes something that becomes physical if it runs long enough.

Ayurveda reaches the same place from a different direction.

When digestive fire is weak, food is not fully broken down, and what remains behind is ama. Ama lodges in the tissues and blocks the channels the body relies on to clear waste, so the body loses the ability to take out its own garbage.

Two systems, separated by geography and centuries, are both watching a body that cannot clear what it needs to clear.

That convergence is why I start every oncology case in the same place.

Fresh whole food instead of ultra-processed, because that one change removes more inflammatory load than anything else available to you.

Less starch. Omega-3s daily and consistently, since consistency does more here than dose. Turmeric with a fat source and black pepper, because without both it passes straight through and does very little.

Your dog was just diagnosed with cancer. You have thirty browser tabs open and a cart full of supplements you cannot pronounce.

I know that place. I lived it with Nacho.

Every family who comes to me in that first week arrives with the same question: what do I do first?

The answer is much smaller than you are expecting, and it’s not a list of 40 items.

The body is not confused right now. It needs less inflammation and a stronger immune response.

Every decision you make from here either serves those two goals or it does not.

Nutrition is where you start, because your dog eats two or three times a day, every day, for the rest of their life.

Nothing else you control shows up with that kind of frequency or that kind of influence.

Put the shopping cart down. Look at the bowl.

Over the next few posts I will walk you through exactly how to do that, including the
Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine and Ayurvedic principles I use with every oncology client in my practice.

Part 1 of 4. Save this one for the day you need it.

I’m honored to be a featured speaker at the upcoming Big Ass Dog Summit, a free virtual educational event dedicated to the unique needs of large and giant breed dogs. πŸ’œ

My presentation, Joint Health for Giant Breeds, will address the factors that influence mobility and musculoskeletal health, including growth, body condition, nutrition, appropriate movement, lifestyle, and proactive support throughout the dog’s lifetime.

Joint health is not simply an issue to address once stiffness or discomfort appears. For giant breeds in particular, thoughtful prevention and early intervention can make a meaningful difference in comfort, function, and quality of life.

The summit takes place August 21–23, 2026, and registration is free.

Registration link in the comments.

I look forward to sharing this important conversation with large and giant breed dog owners, professionals, and advocates! πŸΎπŸ•

Most food in this country travels 1,500 to 2,500 miles before it reaches you. What’s in these bottles travels 1.4 miles.

This company’s farm to bottle philosophy is completely in line with how I cook and think about food and the reason these supplements are in rotation for my own dogs.

This company has been family owned since 1929, and they have 700 acres of their own certified organic farmland.

They even mill their own grains! πŸŒΎπŸ’›

In this video, I talk about the too three supplements I use and why - check it out! 🐾
