We had a new addition to our little farm yesterday. I found a baby bunny, about 3 weeks old in the rabbit pen. Mama rabbit has dug an underground room that she lines with fur and has babies in. Then she covers the entrance back up to hide them. I guess she must dig them out at night to feed then covers them up in the daytime. They do well until they are old enough to leave their nest, then they either get out of the pen somehow or something gets in and gets them. The dogs were after this little one when I found him. We lost the entire first litter this way and it looks like he is the only survivor of this litter. Right now, I have a small hutch I have put in the big pen and I’m closing baby and mama up at night so she can feed him and in the morning, I let mama out and bring baby inside to another cage to keep an eye on him until I see he is eating on his own and doesn’t need mama. I hope this works and this little one makes it.

A couple of weeks ago, I wasn’t getting a lot of eggs and no dark brown eggs. I couldn’t figure out what was happening to them. Today I found out, lol. Chickens do some crazy things!

So my hens have been doing some really weird things. I have found 2 different stockpiles of eggs that were hidden recently. I think part of that problem has bed. Caused by 3 different hens going broody and keeping the other girls out of the nesting box they normally all want to use. But then I found a tiny little egg that someone laid. It was about half the size of a normal egg. This sometimes happens when a young hen lays her first egg but all my girls are over a year old and have been laying for months! Then, a couple of days ago, I found a huge egg, about double the regular size! I don’t have any idea which hen laid the monster egg but it had to be painful! It’s so big, the carton won’t close. I haven’t cracked it open yet, I’m thinking it’s a double yolk, but I’ve also seen videos of huge eggs that have another whole egg inside them. I’ll post an update soon when I crack it open. Never a dull moment around here!

My little container garden is doing really well this year. My regular garden had so many problems. From using rabbit manure with a much too high nitrogen content, to rabbits getting loose and eating many of my plants, to too much rain, nothing grew or produced well so I’m happy to see my containers thriving.

These are potato baskets. Just laundry baskets from the dollar store that I punched a few drainage holes in the bottom, lined them with black trash bags, and filled with dirt and compost with some rabbit manure. Then I cut up some potatoes, and planted them in the holes in the baskets. I am hoping at the end of the season I can dump out the dirt and find lots of potatoes inside! I have tried other potato baskets where you start with a little dirt at the bottom and keep adding dirt as the stems grow. Those weren’t very successful for me so I’m hoping these work better. One is red potatoes, the other is russet. I’ll update a few times on how they are progressing. I also planted a basket like this with strawberries to see how that works out.

Every year I try to experiment a little and see what may work better for me than what I’ve always done. Some of those experiments are complete failures, some turn out to be an improvement on what I used to do. This year, I’m planting a few new things in containers, I either to get better sunlight, or keep them away from my chickens, or just to add a new bit of gardening space. This year, I’ve planted some squash varieties in containers, as well as some snow peas. So far, they are looking good! This is a zucchini plant.
