πΎIt's time! πΎ
Did you know that the highest mortality rate of newborn puppies is in the first seventy two hours of life. The first seven days are considered critical but the first seventy two hours are vital. Even in the most ideal situations or with the most skilled care pups can unfortunately pass away. Puppies can't control their temperature at birth so its important to keep them warm consistently without overheating as to avoid dehydration. Simple things such as temperature fluctuations, retained fluid in lungs from birth, infection that may not yet be visible, and even lack of maternal care can all contribute to a pups rapid decline. There are many contributing factors yet each puppy can present differently which is why skilled training and instincts are key. Its important during these delicate first hours and days you document pups weights, their overall body condition, and watch for even minor signs of struggle or decline. There's very little room for error along with very little sleep which is why its important you take all this in to consideration before choosing a whelping service. This isn't a job for the weak and its consistent hard work 24 hours a day to ensure moms and pups not only survive but thrive. If you are looking for a whelper please ask them questions, get to know them and tour where your moms and pups will be staying. No professional will ever get upset by your questions or concerns and they'll appreciate being vetted before you decide to use their services.
