WARNING!!! DO NOT GIVE THESE TO YOUR DOG!!

Rawhide chews are made from the leather industry’s leftovers. The hides are taken directly from the kill floors at slaughterhouses and placed into high-salt brines, which helps slow their decay. Most rawhide chews are manufactured in China, and it can take weeks to months before these brined hides make it to the tanneries for their final manufacture. Once the hide arrives at a tannery, it is soaked and treated with lime to help separate the fat from the skin and the hair is removed by chemical and physical efforts.

After the rawhide chews have been made, they're preserved with various chemicals, which may include formaldehyde or chromium salts. When rawhide chews have been tested, they've shown things like lead, arsenic, mercury and other toxic metals as well. Dyes and glue are used to make the chews into pretty shapes, to make them more appealing.

Dogs can swallow the chews whole or are able to break off chunks that can pose a major choking hazard or cause an intestinal blockage, and both are life-threatening events.
