Magic Happens Rabbit Rescue

Magic Happens Rabbit Rescue Make a difference in somebunny's life - adopt a rescued rabbit! MHRR is a group of volunteers and foster homes in and around the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area.
(111)

Rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small critters come from animal control agencies, are strays, dumps at pet stores or vet clinics, or are surrendered by individuals/families who can no longer care for their pets. We also visit classrooms and scout meetings to teach little ones about rabbit care when we are able. We strive to be of service to our community by offering boarding, nail trims, and answe

ring husbandry and behavior questions. Since 2004, we have saved and re-homed over 2,000 rabbits and small animals! We are a 501(c)3 organization and donations are tax deductible.

Congrats to Aries on her "foster fail" this Christmas! She has been with this sweet family for years after being found dumped in the woods, and while there's no change in her home life or location, we are so happy that she is now in her forever home! ❤️

Care Day was chilly but fun! Many of the buns were hamming it up for the loads of goodies they got - one of our volunteers/fosters brought some tube forage toys, and our guinea pig director brought over 2 garbage bags worth of donated veggies that we got sorted. Jack Skellington also said goodbye to his foster mom who is graduating LSU & moving (we will miss you!) so he came to the Bungalow to stay while he awaits a new family. Rizzo, Gomez, and Wednesday & Enid got a little help with their molting too, though that was probably not their favorite part of today. 😄

Quick reminder that rabbits and guinea pigs should not be considered as gifts for kids. Also a reminder that we do not consider children as primary caretakers - a primary caretaker is the individual who will be paying for vet trips - which are rarely under $100, especially if they’re experiencing issues - and the primary caretaker is responsible for noticing health issues. Expecting a child to notice these things isn’t fair not only to the animal, but to the child for a variety of reasons.

We’ve had rabbits surrendered with broken limbs go ‘unnoticed’ by parents because the child did not want to admit the animal was injured and ‘get in trouble.’ A sniffle may be not deemed worth going to the doctor for, or reason enough to tell parents. We've seen this happen, multiple times.

Rabbits inevitably will need to go to the vet for one reason or another - starting with at least once a year to receive their RHDV2 vaccine. If they stop eating, that is an emergency and should be treated as such. Not knowing if/when they missed a meal or if their p**ps are off is important and often requires veterinary attention or at the least intervention.

Rabbits and guinea pigs are considered exotic animals - they are unfortunately great at hiding illness or injury. While we know there are always exceptions in regards to kids caring for animals, we expect parents to be playing an active role in ownership and responsibility. Rabbits and guinea pigs should be considered family pets - not just something for the kids.

We also do not encourage or promote housing outdoors. We’ve seen no health benefits to it. They do not live longer, and if anything they experience more health issues, both with more exposure to problems (temperature extremes, mites/insects, predators, etc.) and more often issues are missed when they are not under a more watchful eye (including in a garage or other indoor but not-often-occupied room).

Supervised outdoor exercise time in a safe space is fine, but unsupervised outside time is not recommended at all. Accidents happen, and they are prey animals - rabbits can be startled and jump out of pens, or wild animals or loose animals may attack them. Even if they don't get ahold of the rabbit, bunnies often injure themselves (including broken toes & legs) by racing around frantically during the attack.

It happens more than most people realize - we have heard literally thousands of incidents/accidents where even with a good amount of preparation, the pet's enclosure was compromised and the rabbit suffered a death that didn't have to happen. We used to adopt to outdoor homes when we first started nearly 20 years ago - but we have not in a very, very long time for good reasons.

We will not be “expediting” any applications due to it being “Christmas time.” We will be expecting the normal amount of preparation from all adopters, which is a proper habitat that we have approved, and making sure adopters are prepared for the care involved (hint: lots of hay and p**p clean up - they are grazing animals there’s constant intake and output), and that appropriate vets are chosen and they are aware of emergency vets in the area. Rabbit illness happens quickly and often unexpectedly.

We do our best to help make sure owners are prepared since in most cases, these rabbits first owners were not and they don't deserve to go through that again.

Our volunteers are also trying to enjoy the holidays with their families and are experiencing even less "extra time" to dedicate so please be patient with us as we want to work with each and every person who is interested in becoming a rabbit parent. We want it to be a pleasant experience for all!

It's ! While we may not have been as active on social media for various reasons, things haven't really slowed down behind the scenes ! This year has been particularly rough on us with medical cases - We've had not one, but 2 bunnies receive CT scans, and 3 bunnies in need of specialized surgeries or diagnostics, on top of a slew of 'minor' cases that needed a little more treatment than usual (Wednesday, Gomez, Eugene, to name a few recent examples!). We've had several bunnies that have needed various diagnostics throughout the year.

Our current long-term medical cases are: Elvira (monitoring for possible E.C.), Lady Rowan (went to LSU for advice on her bizarre bloodwork) and Chimichanga (monitoring anemia). Chica (a fospice case with a jaw abscess) also got treated again this month.

Elvira was originally rescued by another rescue in March and we took over her care in June. She had a horrible case of ear mites which lead to a middle ear infection that needed TECA surgery. Along with that, she has been getting fancy antibiotics and we've been having cultures done when needed to help us make sure she's good to go.

Lady Rowan was rescued Easter weekend after a dog attack and her leg was broken. She needed her leg amputated shortly after and we noticed a big increase in water intake and odd p**ps. She was treated for an infection and coccidia, and while her attitude has been wonderful her bloodwork has been all over the place. We confirmed with an ultrasound at LSU last week that she does seem to have something going on with her liver, and we're trying another round of meds to see if we can even things out for her (no help from the fine needle aspirates that were also done).

Gomez just got his biopsy report back and switched medicines to see if that angry nose/cheek can get healed up.

Our 'looking good and almost ready' cases are currently Rizzo (abscess), and Wednesday (healing broken front leg).

We set up Patreon earlier this year which has been a HUGE help with us receiving donations monthly to help us keep things going for the bunnies! (Which if you sign up for Monthly Mail before the end of the month to ensure you receive a special Christmas Ornament from us!)

We'd love to restore our cushion after a long year of medical cases and specialist vet trips! Every donation size matters and helps out the bunnies! Donating as little as $3 a month on Patreon is a huge help as well!

We are so thankful for everyone who has donated and/or helped us fundraise this year - It has all made a huge difference in how much we have been able to help bunnies and even guinea pigs in need!!!

Wednesday & Enid are working on the bunny's wishlist (maybe so it can be mailed to Santa early? 🎅). They've added a new bunny cam for the Bungalow as our old phone cameras crossed the 🌈 🌉. We may or may not have also asked them to add a fancy new collapsible wagon for the hard-working volunteers to use when we go to educational presentations as the old one is also wearing out fast.
