Mentored by Dick Russell...we offer a philosophy of dog training that is...GENTLER, MORE RATIONAL & EASIER
on both dog & human. Our 6 week obedience course will teach you how
to train your dog to sit, lie down, stay, come
when called and to heel on a loose leash, all
while establishing a bond and fostering respect

Take a dog out this weekend...even if just for the day

WANT TO TAKE A DOG OUT JUST FOR THE DAY?!?!

We try to make our shelter as comfortable as possible but let’s face it, all the hustle and bustle is stressful. Studies show even just a few hours out of the kennel helps dogs de-stress and decompress from the shelter life.
So come on help them chill out and get good vibes!!!

Go to the park, watch a movie, go to a festival, grab a puppicciono, or just take a walk around the lsu lakes! YOU will be the HIGHLIGHT of their week!!

Who knows you may even bump into someone who wants to adopt the dog!! 🐶💙🏠

As South Louisiana temperatures are sure to be well above 90° for the foreseeable future, it makes sense to address shaving dogs as a means to help them "be cool".

Unless there's a medical reason, you should not clip or shave your dogs coat. Their hair actually helps to regulate their body heat and protects their skin from UV rays. Yes - dogs can get sunburns. Their skin is usually quite fair under their coat.

What IS recommended is routine brushing to help remove any undercoat from double coated dogs and to keep it from getting matted.

Summer is a great time to foster! Maybe you are a teacher with a bit more time on your hands or a college student with some time off? Anyone can try fostering this summer! It's quick and easy to get started. Apply online www.fotabr.org/foster-1 or in person at The Dog Adoption House. We provide everything you need, and no long term commitment is required. Try it for a couple days, a weekend, a week, or longer. It's up to you! We work with your schedule. Our fosters have found it very rewarding to be part of the bridge that gets a dog or puppy in need from homelessness to its forever home. We think you will, too!

Admittedly, I find the graphic a bit confusing.

In full disclosure, I'm not a veterinarian.

And as much as I appreciate shelters and rescues having a spay/neuter policy before adopting out dogs, for those who can opt to wait, it is worth a conversation with a vet you trust about potential benefits to putting off the procedure.

Lastly, for those worried that spaying will make your female lazy and/or gain weight, or hoping that neutering will calm your male, those are antiquated schools of thought and should not factor in to your decision.

Updated information from the University of California study on the effects of spay/neutering.

East Baton Rouge Parish has a population of almost 450,000 people. Companion Animal Alliance has a staff of a little over 50 people. Our staff cannot continue to effectively serve its community with the amount of animals being taken into our care on a daily basis, as we have already taken in over 140 animals in 3 days alone this week. We currently have 325 dogs at our shelter and only have 177 dog kennels. This is not okay. We need our community to help us take care of these animals.

CAA is now in such a desperate situation that we are euthanizing for space. That means that if a dog is skinny, heartworm positive, anxious, stressed, or a number of other treatable conditions, our shelter staff is being forced to make the extremely difficult decision of euthanizing the animal. People who work in animal welfare are innately animal lovers at heart, and it's hurting us to make these choices. Please help us help them.

Here is what we need from our community: CAA needs 75 dogs (we are moving cats quickly, thankfully) to leave our shelter by end of day tomorrow, whether it be through adoptions, fosters, or a forever rescue partner. Help us help theml!

We are waiving adoption fees for ready to go pets today and tomorrow and are requesting emergency fosters for a minimum of one week for our dogs. Fosters must be 18+ and can stop by today and tomorrow until 5:30 pm.

Our shelter works tirelessly to provide as many programs, goods, and services that we can for our public. Programs like Pets for Life, an outreach program dedicated to providing aid to pet owners in underserved communities, and our Pet Food Pantry, which provides free food to pet owners, will NOT be there to help if we cannot sustain our basic shelter functions. We complete transports of animals to rescue partners frequently and as often as possible, we have an amazing foster base, and regularly do waived fees and adoption specials- this is not enough. We need YOU, the community we serve, to step up.

Please consider adopting, fostering, donating, volunteering, or at least advocating for the people and the pets at CAA!

Moreover, if the sum of the temperature and humidity is 150 or above, you should not walk your dogs. It's the time of year to be an early riser and get your walks in before breakfast.

An animal shelter posted something along the lines of "if you are an adult and don't want people to know you are playing pokemon, we will rent our shelter dogs to you for $5 an hour so it
looks like you are walking your dog." Haha, right? Here are some of the results so far:

1) They now have a waiting list of people who want to PAY FOR THE PRIVELAGE OF WALKING A DOG.

2) They have made so much money in "rental fees" that they have waived adoption fees

3) When the people renting the dogs are out walking, the post pictures of themselves playing the game on FB and Instagram. People are then coming to the
shelter asking to adopt specific dogs.

4) On at least two occasions, people have called the shelter and said "Hey, i didn't think I wanted a dog. But me and THIS dog get along REALLY well. I'm not bringing him back"

5) The shelter currently has no dogs avaliable to rent, and there is a waiting list. Because all of the dogs have been adopted!! They are currently bringing dogs in from a different shelter to be "rented"

Last evening, we graduated our 1st class of 2024!

We started 5 weeks ago with young, energetic puppies, timid rescues and anxious dogs, unable to control themselves at the site of another pup. Through their handlers dedication and consistency, every dog was able to put their newfound skills on display.

Even as we start our 14th year helping folks in the area have the canine companion of their dreams, it never gets old.

A special "shout out" goes to George, the English Bulldog, who won the Paper Plate Recall Relay.

We would appreciate the opportunity to help you and your dog live your best lives together. Go to www.fleurdelead.com for further information and let us know if you have any questions.

If your dog hears "no" more than affection, we can help. We start a new session tomorrow!

Dog training is great for curbing undesireable behaviors (jumping on folks, pulling on the leash, etc.). The REAL benefit though is the relationship you're building with your pup. And like all relationships, it requires time, intent, and consistent effort. You can't rush it and you can't force it. In the end, you will absolutely gain a newfound appreciation for your dog, and they will think you're the greatest thing since peanut butter in a Kong.
