Founded in 1979, the Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS) is the first NO-KILL non-profit animal organization/shelter committed to the well-being of animals in the Baton Rouge community. Our volunteers can be found caring for animals in their home, photographing and videoing animals for adoption, performing shelter maintenance and cleaning, purchasing and stocking supplies, returning phone
calls and emails, making public appearances with adoptable pets, visiting nursing home patients with their pets, performing educational presentations to children, fundraising, assisting and educating the community in spay/neuter efforts, and working on special events just to name a few.

“I could never do that, I would just want to take them home!” That’s the most common reaction I get when I tell people I volunteer at an animal shelter. I get it—I really do. After my very first shift about two years ago, I sat in my car sobbing. I called my mom and told her I just couldn’t go back; it was too heartbreaking seeing the dogs without homes, some of them having been there for years. But I made myself go back each week because those sweet dogs needed to be fed, walked, cuddled, and shown that not all humans are bad, and that this was only temporary until they found their forever homes.
Guess what? Each week it got a little easier. The tears became less frequent, and the shelter became my refuge. It’s where I go once a week for three hours, knowing that the physical labor I’m doing has immediate results—happy, healthy, loved dogs. We don’t often get to see that kind of instant gratification these days. And the most rewarding part? Watching a dog that came in skinny and scared transform into a tail-wagging pup, posing for pictures with their new family before heading to their forever home.
I don’t usually write posts like this, but I felt compelled to share, especially for those of you interested in supporting your local shelters but unsure how to get involved. There are so many ways to help—fostering, assisting with adoption events, volunteering at the shelter, helping with social media or admin tasks, and more. It’s been one of the biggest joys of my life, and I hope everyone can experience the love and gratitude of a wet nose on their face and a wagging tail.

We’re in this together. Please help if you can.
East Baton Rouge Parish has a population of almost 450,000 people. Companion Animal Alliance has a staff of a little over 50 people. Our staff cannot continue to effectively serve its community with the amount of animals being taken into our care on a daily basis, as we have already taken in over 140 animals in 3 days alone this week. We currently have 325 dogs at our shelter and only have 177 dog kennels. This is not okay. We need our community to help us take care of these animals.
CAA is now in such a desperate situation that we are euthanizing for space. That means that if a dog is skinny, heartworm positive, anxious, stressed, or a number of other treatable conditions, our shelter staff is being forced to make the extremely difficult decision of euthanizing the animal. People who work in animal welfare are innately animal lovers at heart, and it's hurting us to make these choices. Please help us help them.
Here is what we need from our community: CAA needs 75 dogs (we are moving cats quickly, thankfully) to leave our shelter by end of day tomorrow, whether it be through adoptions, fosters, or a forever rescue partner. Help us help theml!
We are waiving adoption fees for ready to go pets today and tomorrow and are requesting emergency fosters for a minimum of one week for our dogs. Fosters must be 18+ and can stop by today and tomorrow until 5:30 pm.
Our shelter works tirelessly to provide as many programs, goods, and services that we can for our public. Programs like Pets for Life, an outreach program dedicated to providing aid to pet owners in underserved communities, and our Pet Food Pantry, which provides free food to pet owners, will NOT be there to help if we cannot sustain our basic shelter functions. We complete transports of animals to rescue partners frequently and as often as possible, we have an amazing foster base, and regularly do waived fees and adoption specials- this is not enough. We need YOU, the community we serve, to step up.
Please consider adopting, fostering, donating, volunteering, or at least advocating for the people and the pets at CAA!

Our sweet,anxious Dexter has been adopted! After nearly 6 months his foster dad decided to make it permanent. We’re so excited for Dexter!

Our adoption facility will be open to the Public on Saturdays from 12pm-3pm. Due to Covid 19 requirements to enter our facility could change without warning. If you cannot make our adoption days, and if you are interested in a specific animal, please fill out our adoption application and if approved an appointment can be set up for you to meet the animal dependent on volunteer availability.
