Founded in 1979, the Capital Area Animal Welfare Society (CAAWS) is the first NO-KILL non-profit animal organization/shelter committed to the well-being of animals in the Baton Rouge community. Our volunteers can be found caring for animals in their home, photographing and videoing animals for adoption, performing shelter maintenance and cleaning, purchasing and stocking supplies, returning phone

calls and emails, making public appearances with adoptable pets, visiting nursing home patients with their pets, performing educational presentations to children, fundraising, assisting and educating the community in spay/neuter efforts, and working on special events just to name a few.

The adoption update you’ve all been waiting for… GWEN! 🥹💓🤩🐾🐶

At just 6 months old, Gwen was brought to CAAWS because her previous owner’s landlord deemed her “of an aggressive breed”, knowing nothing about her. She then spent just over 2 years waiting in the shelter for someone to see past her breed and fall in love with her heart.

In May of this year, a family from Tennessee saw a video of her on our TikTok page and knew that she had to be theirs. They immediately got into contact with us and planned a road trip from Tennessee to Baton Rouge just to meet her. After 734 long days in the shelter, Gwen’s forever family found her and loved her for exactly who she is. 😭💓💓

Gwen now has a mom, dad, and FOUR fur siblings! She has formed an inseparable bond with one of their other pups, Millie, (a rescue pup from Costa Rica!) and they run and play all day every day. Her new family says she is such a little ham and that they are so lucky to have her. 🥹

To add to this already special story, Gwen’s mom was able to get a $2,500 donation from her company directly to CAAWS. 🤩😭🙏🏼 We could not be more grateful for their generosity and dedication to CAAWS, even from states away. We are still over the moon about this adoption, things couldn’t have worked out more perfectly. Thank you to Gwen’s family for choosing CAAWS! We all miss her sweet face, but she could not have found a better family.

Merry is a shy observer with a really sweet side. He loves playing with his siblings and taking naps in the cat tree. Merry was the scaredy cat of the litter but is growing into being a brave kitty who loves chin pets when he gets to know you!

Pippin is a purring machine - he loves to cuddle up on your lap or chest and purr away. He's always seeking attention and loves to play with his 4 other siblings. He's very close to his younger sister Poppy. He is affectionate and loves to play when he gets to know you!

Sam is the adventurous one of his litter. He loves to explore and is not afraid of our other cat - he's brave in the face of his grumpy aunt kitty! Sam loves to fall asleep in your lap and get all of the attention. He also loves playing with his 4 siblings and chasing them around their room.

Nori is a brave girl - she was the first to climb out of her kitten box and the first to learn to jump out of her pen, and to eat food. She is so affectionate and playful. Nori will sleep in your lap or just want to be near you. She is a bundle of energy and joy, curiosity and whimsy.

Poppy is the baby of her litter - she is a bit shy when she first meets someone but she warms up and becomes the sweetest, seeking out affection and giving purrs in return. She loves playing with her big brother, Pippin (who is also up for adoption) and does well being with her siblings or momma. She is curious about all toys and loves jumping in and out of boxes!

RINGO STARR STILL NEEDS A HOME! (Or a foster 🐱💓)

This little old man is ready to find somewhere that he can relax and spend his days quietly in the sun. Ringo is 10 years old now, so he prefers a slower life than the shelter environment can offer him. He is a little bit stressed here and would benefit greatly from a peaceful home!

He’s quirky, playful, and so handsome. He’s definitely more independent and would love to find an owner that can appreciate that quality about him and respect his boundaries. 🐾🥰

Moana is sweet as can be! She loves attention, loves to play, and is super cute (of course) 😉

She gets along with certain dogs, but seems to prefer the company of dogs larger than her. She’s not the biggest fan of other small dogs. You can meet her on Saturday from 12-4pm at the shelter to see if she’s the perfect fit for you and your family! 🐶🦴🤩

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS! 🐶🐱🐾💓

Since the beginning in 1979, CAAWS has been a 100% volunteer run organization. We have an abundance of volunteer opportunities. Whether you need community service hours, you love animals, or you’re just looking to get out of the house, we have a role for you!

- In-shelter volunteer opportunities include morning and evening dog/cat shifts (our biggest need!)
- Public events
- Pet touch therapy
- Fostering
- Humane education
- Special events committee
- Fundraising committee
- Administration/communications

No matter what specialty you would like to sign up for, we would be happy to have your help. Visit our website, www.caaws.org , and check out our “Volunteer” page. Sign up for what fits your lifestyle and we will find a spot for you. We couldn’t do it without you! 🤩💓
