Still looking for that first daylily bloom, scapes are everywhere! I'm surviving on pond lily flowers....Until then, I'm expanding a shade garden bed, weeding, edging and I've gone through a 1/2 truckload of mulch leftover from last year and an entire new load delivered May 14 and completely gone as of today!

Woohoo! The article I researched and wrote for the Spring 2025 issue of the ADS Region 2 Great Lakes Daylily Journal won an award at the national ADS convention this weekend in Valdosta, GA! The award was for 'Best Article about Hybridizers or Hybridizing' in a regional newsletter. Shout out of thanks to all the patient hybridizers who shared their journey with me, Saundra the editor, and everyone who found something they could use in its pages!

Early blooms here, we *seem* to be past frost warnings, but no promises. About 6 Daylily cultivars are scaping, that's 1.5% of our plants, and I am really looking forward to seeing the first ones! Meanwhile, edging and mulching, mulching and edging....

So, before y'all go yellin it's too early to put seedlings out in the beds, I know that, just read before the yellin. The class of 2024 has survived direct seeding into their bed, a summer of drought and baking temps and a winter of lows of --12 degrees. Now, while dormant, I have started moving them to the next bed with 6" spacing. There are Tet Here's To You Bill Robinson crosses, extra dark crosses, broken color crosses and toothy crosses. THEN, maybe, just MAYBE, I will have room to direct seed the class of 2025....I hope.

I am NOT making this stuff up...after a sunny 70 degrees on Sunday, we are now in a blizzard, someone has been pranking Akron with at least 4 Bigfoot appearances, we DO have tornado warnings, high winds with power and internet outages for days, and, to top it all off, we heard the BOOM of a meteor that made an impact near North Olmstead, knocking books off shelves and heard all over NE Ohio.....personally, I'm avoiding open skies and abducting aliens as I just don't have time for that right now!

In case this is news, I should start with the fact that I am proud to be a Summit County Master Gardener Volunteer. Our major event of the year is "Tour Of Gardens," both virtual and in the outstanding area gardens themselves. We are already working hard to put on the patrons' breakfast, assemble garden decor and collectibles for the Shop, and lining up plants to buy in our Posie Shop, all the day of the event! If you would like to see it in person or online, the QR codes are live plus tickets are available at the listed locations. Come join us!
