Allie joined us a couple of weeks ago from a shelter down south. She ended up homeless, along with 29 other dogs in the home, when the owner became hospitalized and all dogs were confiscated.
While all dogs were in reasonable shape, several do/did have significant medical concerns as has Allie.
Prior to arriving in Illinois, Allie had surgery to remove the lower front of her jaw due to a squamous cell carcinoma tumor. The surgeon was able to get ok margins but not the 2-3 cm that are best.
We were aware of this diagnosis prior to bringing Allie into BAARK but, we did not want her stuck in a kennel in an overcrowded shelter as her “final resting place.” And we feel all seniors deserve to spend their final years (or months) surrounded by a family of their own.
So…..once in Illinois, we took Allie to our vet and then, an oncologist for guidance.
Results of a lymph node biopsy indicate metastasis. Thankfully chest x-rays look clear.
At present, Allie is playful, energetic, eating well and just the sweetest girl ever. We want her to stay that way as long as possible. So, after discussion with the oncologist, we have elected palliative care for Allie rather than chemotherapy to ensure her time with us is the best ever!!! We may consider palliative radiation if her lymph nodes become even larger than current, as that will keep her comfortable.
Not the best news for our Allie. And we sure hope Allie will have many months and hopefully at least a year with her fosters, Jenny Leech & family, to enjoy her life.
It’s hard to not want to go ‘all in’ with IV chemotherapy but even with that we may be able to get only 12 more months with her. More realistically it would be fewer months than that and filled with vet visits.
At almost 13 years old and with the definitive metastasis, we feel that keeping Allie comfortable and happy for whatever time we have with her, is the care option that makes the most sense.
Allie’s foster family is dedicated to loving her, making sure she’s not in pain and being right next to her as her forever family to the end.
