๐พ While the Barnwell County Animal Shelter is closed due to a Parvo outbreak, this is the perfect time to educate our community about this deadly disease. ๐พ
Let me ask you this: How many people really understand Parvo? ๐ถ๐พ
Parvovirus is a highly contagious and potentially fatal disease that primarily affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs. It attacks the intestinal tract and immune system, causing severe vomiting, diarrhea (often bloody), dehydration, weakness, and, without treatment, can quickly become life-threatening. ๐๐พ
Now letโs talk about cost. ๐ฒ๐พ
A full series of puppy vaccines typically costs between $75 and $200. Keeping your dogโs vaccines current costs far less than treating a preventable disease. ๐๐พ
Parvo treatment can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the severity of the illness and the length of hospitalization needed. ๐ฅ๐พ
๐พ Vaccines: $75โ$200
๐พ Parvo Treatment: $1,000โ$5,000+
The choice is simpleโprevention is safer, less stressful, and far more affordable. โค๏ธ๐พ
Parvo can survive in the environment for months and can be carried on shoes, clothing, hands, food bowls, leashes, and other surfaces. Dogs do not have to come into direct contact with an infected dog to become sick. ๐ฆ ๐พ
For shelters like Barnwell County Animal Shelter, a Parvo outbreak carries a tremendous financial burden. Extensive cleaning, quarantine procedures, testing, treatment, and temporary closures all require resources that could otherwise be used to help more homeless animals. ๐ ๐พ
And there is another cost that cannot be measured in dollars. During a shelter closure, adoptions must be paused. That means dogs and cats who are ready for homes must wait even longer. Every day a shelter is closed is another day an animal remains in a kennel instead of on a couch, another day a family misses finding their new best friend, and another day space is unavailable for animals that may need sheltering. ๐๐๐
Vaccinating your pets doesnโt just protect your dogโit helps protect every dog in our community and helps shelters continue their lifesaving work. ๐พโค๏ธ
