These temps,are dangerous for your fish. They will be on the bottom where the ground temp will keep them warm. That is why the depth of your pond is so important.Dont run your pump that would be taking that warm water off the bottom and sending it into the super cold air that will chill it below what your fish can tolerate. Don't confuse not freezing because it is moving with with staying warm . Moving water can get way colder them what the fish can stand.If your pond is not deep enough get a submersible stock tank heater from farm supply the fish will hover around it !

It is time to be opening your pond. If you are not doing it yourself make sure you hire someone you can trust. One of the Big Big red flags is having them tell you you need new equipment if your pond has been running great for years.I'm not saying that things don't wear out but be careful. Let me know if you need some help .

Happy Spring Pond People .this is the hardest time of year for our ponds.It is so hard to wait till it is warm enough to safely start getting out ponds going.Remember the first and most important rule don't feed your fish till the filter system is running ,you dont want them living in a toilet that is not being flushed . The Magic temp that sayes it is time to start is 50 check the temp first thing in the morning and when it is 50 or above for 4 days in a row it is time . my pond here in the Mills is 44 degrees a ways to go . I see the fish moving around when it is sunny !

Now is the time to show you are smarter than your fish ! There is a science to taking good care of your fish .You need to understand fish NEVER feel hungry ! They eat because of instinct and learn when and where to feed by our conditioning . When you feed them they learn how and where you feed them .They do not have the capacity to learn when it is to cold to eat as in the wild there is no food available when it is cold .if you feed them when it is cold they will not be able to digest it! It will decay in their stomachs and rot .Killing them from the inside out .So please use a thermometer and do not start feeding them till the water is 50 degrees first thing in the morning for at least 3 days. you also want your filtration running before you feed since your fish will be living in their own waist (YUCK) till it is running .

Spring is here ! It is the hardest time of year for pond people and fish ! please watch your thermometer close .There is a science to pond opening and it is not ; my friend said ,I have always done it like that ,the fish are hungry or a calendar. this is the time of year the most Koi are killed by kindness. such as , Feeding before water temp is steady @ 50 degrees ,starting water movement when fish are week from the winter.Feeding before the filtration is up and running,think of it this way, you don't want them living in their own waist it is like not being able to flush the toilet !Be patient it will pay off in the long run. Koi should live to 100years if they don't you did something wrong !
