Her sister's adopter has donated toward Nona's adoption, so Nona can go home for $100 with an approved application. Our only Animal Control Officer will be on vacation and out of the office from 7-19 to 7-28. We will not have anyone available to pick up strays or go out on any welfare checks until he returns. For any emergencies regarding animals, please call dispatch. Thank you and have a good weekend!

❗️IMPORTANT INFO❗️
It has come to our attention that the public seems to be a little confused about the Nelson Co Animal Shelter vs Humane Society of Nelson Co. Understandably so, as the Humane Society was the sole entity for years. Since the county took over the shelter in 2022, there are now two separate entities. The Humane Society is a friend of the shelter. However, for the public, they are a spay and neuter clinic for cats only. The Shelter is who you need to call for animal control. strays, surrenders, adoptions and questions about local animal laws.

The Nelson County Animal Shelter is an open admission shelter that houses stray dogs and cats found in Nelson County. We hold stray animals for five days hoping that the animals owner will reclaim their pet. If your pet goes missing please do not wait to call us. Please call immediately. We will take a Lost Pet report and notify you if we get your pet. If you have found a pet and are willing to hold onto it to keep it out of the shelter, please call us so we can take a Found Pet report.

If you are a Nelson County Resident and can no longer keep your pet we can take your pet, but we do encourage you to reach out to the Humane Society of Nelson County first. We work very closely with The Humane Society of Nelson County to pull animals from the shelter to give them a chance for adoption or rescue.

We offer both dog and cat overnight drop off cages. The drop off cages are for Nelson County residents to use if they have found a stray animal that needs shelter after operating hours. It is not intended to be used by owners wanting to relinquish their personal pets. If you need to re-home your pet we can help you, but please contact us first. This allows us to get important information and to insure that we have space to help your pet.
