Back-to-school season means new schedules, quieter homes, and routines that look a little different. Whether it is a family dog watching the kids get on the bus or a cat whose college student owner just moved out, pets notice these changes.

A little planning goes a long way. Keeping routines consistent, offering enrichment, and easing pets into time alone can help them adjust as the household shifts.

What is your pet's funniest, weirdest, or most unhinged habit?

We will start: Our clinic cats, W***y and Victor, have to start every morning off with a round of treats. They will then proceed to beg every staff member like they were not already given some. Silly boys.

August heat check: is your pet drinking enough water? 💧

Here is a quick way to tell: gently pinch the skin on the back of their neck. If it snaps back quickly, they are well hydrated. If it is slow to return, they may need more water.

A few easy ways to encourage more drinking:

1. Add a second water bowl in a different room.
2. Try a pet water fountain. Moving water encourages more drinking.
3. Drop a few ice cubes in their bowl on hot days.
4. Add a small splash of low-sodium broth to make it more appealing.

Senior pets hold such a special place in our hearts. 🐾🧡

If your dog or cat is 7 or older, their healthcare needs are starting to shift, and there are a few things worth knowing:
1. Pets 7 and older need wellness exams twice a year, not once. A lot can change in 6 months.
2. Watch for subtle changes: increased thirst, extra sleep, or trouble with stairs
3. Senior bloodwork can catch kidney disease, thyroid issues, and diabetes early when they are most treatable

Myth or fact: dogs and cats age 7 years for every 1 human year. 🐾

Actually, it is more complicated than that, and most pet owners are surprised when they learn the actual numbers.

A 1-year-old dog is developmentally closer to a 15-year-old human. After the first year, the aging rate slows down and varies significantly by species, breed, and size.

Large breed dogs age faster than small breeds.

Cats follow a completely different curve altogether.

Why does it matter?

Because knowing your pet's true biological age helps you understand what kind of care they actually need right now.

Did you know that by age 3, most dogs and cats already show signs of dental disease? 🦷

And here is the part most pet owners do not realize: dental bacteria can travel to the heart, kidneys, and liver, causing serious damage over time.

The good news is that it is largely preventable. Here is where to start:

1. Ask your veterinarian about a professional cleaning if it has been more than a year. Cleanings remove what brushing cannot reach.
2. Brush at home 2 to 3 times a week with a pet-safe toothpaste.
3. Dental chews and water additives can help between brushings.
4. Watch for bad breath, yellow teeth, or reluctance to chew.

Those are your early warning signs.
