Thanks to the incredible generosity of our community, BARCS has been able to provide medical care to hundreds of animals each year through the Franky Fund. A pivotal factor in achieving this has been our partnerships with local veterinary hospitals and clinics. BARCS is so grateful for these partnerships, as they play a significant role in saving the lives of thousands of homeless shelter animals in need of emergency and specialized medical attention.

This week, our heartfelt thanks go out to the wonderful team at Anne Arundel Veterinary Hospital. The care provided by the AAVH team has touched the lives of countless BARCS animals, including Aviva, who received urgent treatment, all made possible by the incredible generosity of our amazing Franky Fund partner.

Sweet Aviva was found alone and in need of urgent medical attention, after his finders noticed a painful-looking injury on his neck. Despite his condition, this gentle kitty remained friendly during his intake exam at BARCS, quickly endearing himself to the medical team. The wound was severe—it stretched from his neck to his upper chest, was filled with pus, had a strong odor, and showed signs of a ruptured abscess and necrotic tissue. He was given antibiotics to help combat the infection, but it was clear the wound required immediate, intensive care. To give him the best chance at healing, Aviva underwent a sedated cleaning and surgical repair to remove the damaged tissue and treat the infection. At that point, it was determined that the best next step for Aviva’s recovery was a transfer to one of our incredible Franky Fund partners for the specialized, lifesaving procedure he urgently needed.

Once in the care of the AAVH team, Aviva was sedated so his wound could be thoroughly treated. The area was clipped and cleaned, the necrotic tissue removed, and the granulation tissue carefully debrided. His surgical repair was a success, and both sutures and a wrap were placed to protect the wound around his neck. The AAVH team described Aviva as a wonderfully sweet and cooperative patient. Once he was stable and ready, he returned to BARCS to continue his recovery.

Back at BARCS, Aviva continued to heal and feel better each day. It wasn’t long before he caught the eye of someone special—and soon after, he was adopted! Now, he’s continuing his recovery in the warmth and comfort of a loving home. We’re so happy for Aviva and wish him all the best on his Happy Tail!
Thank you to Anne Arundel Veterinary Hospital for all of the love and care you give to the BARCS animals who come through your doors!

We would not be able to do what we do without them—and without YOU, our Franky Fund donors. This program relies completely on private donations. Please help us always be ready to save animals like Aviva by giving to our Franky Fund.

Not all "scoops" or "cups" are created equal. When talking to your vet regarding your pets' nutrition and feeding routine, make sure you tell us exactly what a "cup" is to you. Is it a measured cup, or is it a 7-11 slurpee cup?

BARCS OUT OF SPACE: In a little more than 48 hours, 100 new animals have entered BARCS—both dogs and cats. We are completely out of space for dogs and nearly out of space for cats. It has been four months since our shelter reached this point, but we know what comes next. The warmer seasons always bring an influx of animals in need, and last week’s weather tells us that we are about to enter the emergency portion of the year.

Right now, our team is working tirelessly to provide care, comfort, and safety to every new animal entering our shelter. We are doing everything possible to make space, but we can’t do it alone. Only our community can help animals leave safely—opening kennels for the next arrivals and preventing the heartbreaking reality of euthanasia for space. This is a decision our staff and volunteers never want to face, but without urgent action, we will have no choice.

Here’s how you can help today:

🐾 Adopt: Adoption fees are waived starting today through the weekend. Every adoption includes a spay/neuter, microchip, and up-to-date vaccines.

🐾 Foster: We urgently need fosters, especially for large adult dogs. Even short-term fostering saves lives by freeing up kennel space.

🐾 Donate: The costs of caring for 100 new animals—feeding them, providing medical treatment, and keeping them safe—are already mounting. Every dollar makes a difference.

🐾 Rescue Partners: Rescue partners are needed to pull animals from the shelter. If you are an existing partner, please reach out to help. If you are a rescue but not an existing partner, please contact our Rescue Coordinator ([email protected]) to fill out an application.

BARCS is committed to showing every animal that this isn’t their last stop—it’s the start of something better. But we need your help to make that happen.

The care provided by the AAVH team has touched the lives of countless BARCS animals, including Triceratops, who received urgent treatment, all made possible by the incredible generosity of our amazing Franky Fund partner.

Poor 9-month-old Triceratops was found in distress, clearly trying to communicate that he wasn’t feeling well. Upon arrival at BARCS, his initial veterinary intake revealed that he had periodontal disease, a broken tooth with crust and bruising on his upper lip around the tooth's area, and fleas. He was promptly treated for fleas, given pain medication, and started on antibiotics to prevent infection, all while remaining friendly, cooperative, and purring through it all. Over the next few days, his dental condition worsened, with swelling and painful mouth ulcers making it hard for him to eat. At that point, it was decided that the best path forward was to transfer Triceratops to our incredible Franky Fund partner for specialized care, ensuring that this sweet kitten could finally feel comfortable and get back to being his adorable self.

Once in the care of the AAVH team, the ever-sweet Triceratops underwent a successful dental extraction. Afterward, he was reported to be a champ—and it was clear he was feeling much better! Once stable, he returned to BARCS for the next step on his journey to finding a loving home.

Things soon improved for Triceratops as he continued to recover at BARCS, and it wasn’t long before he was adopted into a loving home, forever changing his life. We’re so happy for him and wish him a lifetime of happiness and health!
