We know those prickly kittens look fun but we promise they are not….

During the fall we may see them because it is their mating season but did you know porcupines are drawn to the roadside during spring? This is due to the early, emerging vegetation.

Typically active during the night, as they are nocturnal, they can still sometimes be found during the day. This is often when our furry companions have their unwanted run ins with these less than cuddly creatures.

Have you ever heard that porcupines can throw their quills? While this is simply a myth, when a curious pup goes sniffing they may be met with a face full of quills.

While not usually common, should your pet have a run in with a porcupine, contact your veterinarian or bring them to your local emergency clinic. Having the proper tools and medications will assist in removing them safely.

Atlas has at least one thing in common with the Easter bunny 🐰 - EARS! He sure posed like a pro (even though he’s still not convinced that thing was a real rabbit …)

Socializing your new puppy isn’t just getting them out to meet other people and pets.

There are a lot of things that we wouldn’t normally think could be an issue to our pets as they get older if they aren’t exposed to them when they are young.

Different sounds, smells, sights, objects and so much more can be a source of anxiety to some animals. Exposing them when they are young can help them be better adjusted as they get older.

Check out this great chart below from Good as Gold training to help better understand what it takes to properly socialize your pup.

Dogs with big, floppy ears like our sweet Basset Hound patient, Effie, are extra prone to ear issues. All that adorable ear floppiness can trap moisture, dirt, and debris, creating the perfect environment for infections to brew.

Regular ear cleanings help prevent painful infections, reduce odor, and keep your pup feeling their best!

Here are a few quick tips:
• Check your dog’s ears weekly for redness, odor, or discharge
• Clean as recommended by your vet (don’t overdo it!)
• Always use vet-approved ear cleaners
• Never stick anything deep into the ear canal

If you’re unsure about your dog’s ear health, bring them by! We’re always happy to help keep those ears clean and comfy.

Because healthy ears = a happy, tail-wagging pup!

It’s National Bite Prevention Week!

Every year nearly 4.5 million Americans, more than half being children, are bitten by dogs. Let’s help minimize the risk by learning ways to properly introduce ourselves to a new dog.

Us as owners should always be aware of our surroundings, keeping our dogs leashed while out in public will prevent any unwanted interactions with others. There are many other ways to help prevent an accidental bite such as;

• Never approach an unknown dog or a dog that is alone without an owner.
• Always ask for permission before petting a dog.
• Never approach a dog that is eating or sleeping.
• Teach your children to treat the dog kindly.
• Socializing your puppy is a great way to help them become comfortable around strangers.
• Avoid situations that make your dog become uncomfortable.
• Walking your dog will help keep them healthy and to provide mental stimulation.

Dogs give us so much, it’s up to us to make sure they are kept in a safe and loving home. Following safety guidelines and teaching those around us how to properly introduce yourself to a new dog will help protect us all from the dangers and consequences of dog bites.

Many of you have gotten to know Sam, Dr. Teddy’s daughter over the years. From tagging along to farm calls with her mom as a baby to currently working with us in the clinic as an assistant.

Well, we’ve got BIG news to share….

Sam is officially headed to Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine in August!

We couldn’t be prouder of her as she takes this exciting next step toward her dream. Sam has been an incredible part of our team, and while we’re going to miss her, we know she’s destined for great things.

We’ll be cheering her on every step of the way and can’t wait to welcome her back in the future, this time with a very special title: Doctor!

Congratulations, Sam!
Your Mandak family is so proud of you! ♥️
