Behind Every Safe Surgery: Clean Surgical Packs

When your pet comes in for surgery, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes—and one of the biggest safety steps starts before surgery even begins: sterile surgical packs.

What Is a Surgical Pack?
A surgical pack is a carefully prepared set of sterile instruments and supplies used during procedures.

Each pack is:
✔ Cleaned and inspected
✔ Wrapped for sterilization
✔ Sealed to stay sterile until use

Why Sterility Matters
Even tiny amounts of bacteria can increase the risk of infection. Sterile instruments help protect every patient during surgery.

Enter the Autoclave!
After cleaning, packs go into the autoclave—a machine that uses high-pressure steam and heat to sterilize instruments by killing bacteria, viruses, and spores.

Why We Take It Seriously
Clean packs + sterilization + careful handling = safer procedures and smoother recoveries.

From Our Clinic to You
You may not see the autoclave or instrument prep room, but these behind-the-scenes steps are a huge part of keeping your pet safe.

Clean tools, safe surgeries, happy recoveries!

Why Do Community Cats Have a Tipped Ear?
Ever notice a community cat with the tip of one ear missing? Don’t worry—it’s intentional and actually means something wonderful!

What Is Ear Tipping?
Ear tipping is the removal of a small portion of the left ear tip while a community cat is under anesthesia during their spay or neuter surgery.

Why Do We Do It?
Ear tipping is the universal sign that a community cat has already been through a TNR program (Trap-Neuter-Return).
It helps rescuers and caregivers know the cat has already been:
✔ Spayed or neutered
✔ Vaccinated (where applicable)
✔ Returned to their colony

Why It Matters
Without an ear tip, a cat may accidentally be trapped and brought in again—causing extra stress for the cat and taking resources away from cats that still need help.
Ear tipping helps:
Prevent unnecessary retrapping
Save time and resources
Protect community cats from repeat procedures

It’s Quick & Safe
The ear tip is done while the cat is already under anesthesia, so they don’t feel it—and it heals quickly.

From Our Clinic to You
That tiny ear tip tells a BIG story: this cat has already received care and is part of the solution to reducing overpopulation.

Little ear tip, big impact!

Why Rescues Need Fosters

Rescues save lives every day—but they can’t do it alone. Behind so many successful adoptions is a foster home opening their door (and their heart) to a pet in need.

What Does a Foster Do?
Fosters provide a temporary safe space for pets while they wait for adoption.
They help by giving:
✔ Food, comfort, and socialization
✔ A break from stressful shelter environments
✔ Recovery space after medical care or surgery

Why It Matters
Every foster home opens space for another animal to be saved.
Fosters can help:
Bottle babies needing around-the-clock care
Recovering pets after surgery
Shy or scared animals learning to trust
Mom pets with litters

More Than Just a Home
Fostering helps pets show their true personalities—which can make adoption easier and more successful!

From Our Clinic to You
You don’t have to adopt to save a life. Sometimes, offering a temporary home is enough to change everything.

One spare room can save many lives.

Have you ever fostered? Share your foster story or photos in the comments!

Fun Fact Friday!

Did you know… cats can’t taste sweetness?
That’s right! Unlike dogs (who will happily try to sneak a sugary snack), cats don’t have
the taste receptors for sweet flavors. They’re true carnivores, so their taste buds are all
about meaty, savory goodness instead.

What This Means for Your Kitty
✔ Your cat won’t crave sugary treats
✔ Meat-based diets are what their bodies are built for
✔ Human sweets aren’t just unnecessary—they can be unhealthy

Meanwhile… Dogs
Dogs can taste sweet, which explains why they’re a little less picky (and a lot more
sneaky when snacks are around!).

From Our Clinic to You
Every species is different—and understanding those little quirks helps us care for them
better!

More meat, less sweets!

Trivia Time!
Ready for a quick (and slightly icky) question?
Which type of worm is commonly associated with fleas in pets?
A) Roundworms
B) Hookworms
C) Tapeworms
D) Heartworms
________________________________________
Answer:
C) Tapeworms
Pets can get tapeworms by accidentally swallowing a flea while grooming—yep, one tiny flea can lead to a whole worm problem!

From Our Clinic to You
Keeping up with flea prevention doesn’t just stop itching—it helps prevent worms too!
No fleas = no unwanted tag-alongs!

What Is Cerenia?
At our spay & neuter clinic, keeping pets comfortable doesn’t stop at pain control—we also want to help prevent nausea and vomiting, which is where Cerenia comes in!

What Is Cerenia?
Cerenia (maropitant citrate) is an anti-nausea medication used in both cats and dogs. It helps prevent vomiting and reduces nausea.

Why Do We Use It?
Some pets may feel nauseous from:
✔ Anesthesia
✔ Pain medications
✔ Stress from surgery or travel
Cerenia helps keep them more comfortable during recovery.

Benefits of Cerenia
✔ Helps prevent vomiting
✔ Improves comfort after surgery
✔ Can help pets recover more smoothly

Why It Matters
A nauseous pet may not want to eat, drink, or rest comfortably. Reducing nausea can help them feel better faster.

From Our Clinic to You
Recovery isn’t just about healing—it’s about comfort too. Medications like Cerenia help us give your pet the gentlest recovery possible.

Less nausea, more tail wags and purrs!

What Is Convenia?
At our spay & neuter clinic, sometimes pets need a little extra protection against infection—and that’s where Convenia can help!

What Is Convenia?
Convenia is a long-acting antibiotic injection used in cats. Instead of giving pills at home every day, one injection can continue working for up to two weeks.

Why Do We Use It?
Convenia may be used when pets have:
✔ Skin infections
✔ Wounds or abscesses
✔ Certain bacterial infections
✔ Situations where giving oral medication at home may be difficult

Why Pet Owners Like It
Let’s be honest… not every pet wants to take medicine
Convenia can help by:
Reducing stress from daily medicating
Providing consistent antibiotic coverage
Helping owners who struggle with pills or liquids

Important to Know
Antibiotics are only used when appropriate and necessary. Not every pet or every infection needs Convenia, and your veterinary team will decide what’s safest and most effective.

From Our Clinic to You
Our goal is always safe, effective, and low-stress care for both pets and their people. Medications like Convenia can make recovery a little easier for everyone involved.

One injection, extra protection!

Yellow Isn’t Always Sunny: Let’s Talk Jaundice

At our spay & neuter clinic, we always check pets carefully before surgery—and one thing we watch for is jaundice. It’s a condition that can be a sign of serious illness and should never be ignored.

What Is Jaundice?
Jaundice (also called icterus) happens when there is too much bilirubin in the body, causing a yellow tint to the skin, gums, eyes, or ears.

Signs to Watch For
You may notice:
Yellow gums, eyes, ears, or skin
Lethargy or weakness
Loss of appetite
Vomiting or weight loss

What Causes It?
Jaundice is a symptom, not a disease itself. Possible causes include:
✔ Liver disease
✔ Gallbladder problems
✔ Severe infections
✔ Destruction of red blood cells (hemolytic anemia)

Why It Matters for Surgery
Pets with jaundice may not be safe candidates for anesthesia right away. The underlying cause needs to be addressed first to keep them safe.

From Our Clinic to You
If your pet ever looks “yellow,” don’t wait. Early treatment can make a big difference, and your pet’s safety always comes first.

Pink gums are good—yellow means it’s time to call!
