Hermione
We’re reaching out today with an urgent plea for help for Hermione, a 7-year-old, 12.6-lb female Shih Tzu mix who was found on Beaverton Circle in Loganville, GA, on July 29th. Unfortunately, she has no microchip or owner information, and we have been unable to locate an owner.
Hermione is an older girl who has been through a lot and is currently dealing with significant ear disease, new balance issues, and ongoing medical needs. She needs a rescue partner who can provide continued veterinary care and give her a comfortable place to recover.
🩺 Medical Needs
Hermione recently developed a persistent right-sided head tilt and staggering that has gotten significantly worse since the 25th. She is currently being treated for a significant ear infection, which is believed to be the most likely cause, although old-dog vestibular syndrome is also being considered. She is having difficulty standing and walking, often falling over. She is being monitored closely and has started Cerenia in case her vestibular symptoms cause nausea.
Both ears have shown evidence of drainage, inflammation, and yellow fluid near the eardrums. Her ears were cleaned and treated, and she has been restarted on Doxycycline for 14 days.
Hermione has also experienced recurring eye and nasal discharge and has been treated with eye medication and antibiotics. She will need a dental cleaning and likely extractions as well.
When Hermione arrived, she was severely matted and required sedation to be safely shaved down. She is now in good body condition. She has also previously struggled with her appetite and energy level, likely compounded by the stress of the shelter environment.
Hermione needs continued veterinary care, monitoring of her head tilt and balance issues, completion of her antibiotic treatment, and follow-up for her dental disease.
Hermione has been microchipped, vaccinated, spayed and tested negative for heartworms.
❤️ HERMIONE HAS COME A LONG WAY
Hermione has made remarkable progress with handling since arriving at the shelter. Initially, she was very defensive and would snap when approached or picked up. She appeared especially uncomfortable being removed from her kennel, potentially due in part to the discomfort caused by her severe matting.
Today, she is much more tolerant and affectionate, particularly once she is outside her kennel. She allows staff to leash her, pick her up, clean her, and provide routine care with minimal resistance. She has stopped nipping and snapping, although she may still grumble or verbally object when being lifted.
Because of her age and visual deficits, Hermione does best with slow, predictable handling and verbal cues before physical contact. She is highly motivated by her walks and shows a sweet, cooperative side when given the appropriate approach and time.

Hermione has already made tremendous progress despite everything she has experienced. We believe that getting her out of the shelter and into a calm, loving environment could make an enormous difference in her comfort and quality of life.
