Species Spotlight: Meet “Wheezy” the Gila Monster

Did you know the Gila monster (pronounced HEE-lah) is one of only two venomous lizards in the world? Even though they’re one of the most well-known desert reptiles, they’re actually very rare to encounter in the wild.

Native to the southwestern U.S. and Mexico, Gila monsters are slow-moving but fascinating reptiles. Instead of injecting venom like a snake, they deliver it through grooves in their teeth while chewing.

Next time you visit CALM Zoo, be sure to stop by and say hello to this incredible desert dweller in our Reptile House.
