Don't skip the skim! 🍃
That layer of leaves, pollen, and debris floating on the surface of your pond might seem harmless — but it's one of the biggest threats to your koi's health if left unchecked.
Here's what's actually happening when debris sits on the surface:
Oxygen exchange is blocked. Your pond "breathes" through the water's surface. Debris creates a barrier that restricts gas exchange, dropping dissolved oxygen levels — and koi need that oxygen to thrive.
It decays and spikes your water parameters. Organic matter breaking down releases ammonia and nitrates into the water. Even a small spike can stress your fish, suppress their immune system, and open the door to illness.
It becomes a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. Decomposing surface debris creates anaerobic pockets where bad bacteria flourish — the kind that cause fin rot, ulcers, and secondary infections.
The fix is simple: skim your pond daily, or at minimum every couple of days. A good skimmer net takes less than two minutes and makes a measurable difference in water quality and fish health.
Your koi can't tell you when the water feels off — but you can stay ahead of it. Make skimming part of your routine and your pond will reward you with crystal-clear water and vibrant, healthy fish.
