WE NEED FOSTER HOMES!
Thanks to our volunteers and supporters, VEWS is able to make a big impact on the horses that come to our barn. However, we are a small operation and only have room for a limited number of horses. We are looking for people who would be willing to open up their pastures, barns and stalls to foster companion horses in need!

If you are interested or have any questions, please email us at: [email protected]

🚙🐴 Traveling with Your Horse? Here Are Tips! 🐴🚙

Heading out for a show, trail ride, or even just a change of scenery with your equine companion? Safe and stress-free horse travel takes some pre-planning. Here are a few tips to keep your horse healthy and happy on the road:

✅ Health First

Schedule a pre-trip checkup if your horse hasn’t been seen recently.

Ensure Coggins test and vaccinations (like EHV, influenza, and rabies) are up to date.

Always carry a copy of your health certificate and coggins—some states require it for interstate travel.

💧 Hydration is Key

Bring water from home (horses can be picky!).

Add electrolytes a day or two before and during travel if approved for your horse.

🛻 Trailer Comfort

Check tire pressure, brakes, and floorboards.

Bed the trailer well to minimize slipping and support joints.

Ventilation matters—crack windows or use fans, especially in summer heat.

🥕 Food & Forage

Keep hay accessible during travel to help reduce stress and prevent ulcers.

Avoid feeding grain right before or during the trip to reduce colic risk.

🐴 Rest Stops

Stop every 3-4 hours to offer water and let your horse rest (without unloading unless safe and secure).

On long trips, consider overnight layovers at horse motels or farms.

🧰 Emergency Kit

Include a thermometer, bandage materials, electrolytes, and any meds your horse may need. (call us if you want to purchase a first aid kit 804 333-0333)

Have your vet’s number saved in your phone!

Whether you're traveling 20 miles or 200, a little prep goes a long way for your horse’s safety and comfort. Have questions about travel health certificates, hydration support, or calming strategies? We’re here to help!

Good Morning,
Just a few tips and reminders!

•Dover Equine is entirely farm ambulatory. We have no home-base medical clinic. Due to the nature of this, your appointment time can vary by 60 minutes or so depending on farm conditions, traffic, etc. Flexibility on the day you would like your appointment is very much appreciated. The receptionist is building a schedule and route for the doctor that allows her to spend more time with you and your horses rather than driving. We do our best to create a schedule/route that is good for both you and the doctor, so please try to choose days you will have some flexibility when you call or email to make your appointment.

• Please be respectful and follow the proper lines of communication– Only use the office phone numbers or email to contact Dr. Callie unless specifically asked by her to text or call her cell phone to follow up on a current issue. For ALL emergencies, you must use the emergency paging system through our office phone system. Cell phone service in our area can be unreliable, and she may not get your message!

• Full payment is due at the end of each visit. We do not offer financing. For your convenience, we accept cash, checks, most major credit cards, and CareCredit. You may go to www.carecredit.com if you need financing or would like more information about applying for CareCredit.

• Dr. Callie is the sole veterinarian at Dover Equine. If another client has an emergency, your appointment time can be pushed back significantly or possibly rescheduled to another day. In the event that your horse has an emergency, you can be sure she will respond as promptly to your needs, so we appreciate your patience and understanding when this occurs. If you do need the doctor to come to your farm immediately, there will be an urgent call or emergency fee in addition to your normal farm call fee.

• Farm call fees vary depending on your exact location. The receptionist can give you an estimate of the range you will be in, but the doctor will determine the charge once she drives to your farm and knows your exact location. Be sure to tell the receptionist if the horse is boarded in a different location than the mailing address you provided.

• Please have your horse(s) ready for the doctor to examine when she arrives.
This includes catching/haltering/stalling your horses in an area where your horse, the doctor, and her assistant will be safe.

• Communication is the key to all good relationships. If the doctor is running exceptionally early or late outside the time window you were given, we will contact you. Please be sure to leave the best number to reach you or your agent the day of your appointment with the receptionist when you make your appointment. If you ever have a question or need advice or information, just call the office (804) 333-0333 or email us at [email protected], and we will try to help in any way we are able.

🐴✨ Meet the cutest foal we met yesterday at Dover Equine Veterinary! This little one stole every heart in the barn & ours too — wobbly legs, fuzzy ears, and the sweetest/friendliest you’ve ever seen. 💕

We’re so lucky to be part of her first big check-up and can’t wait to watch her grow strong and healthy. Welcome to the world, little star, named Firefly 🌟

Most equine owners know that a negative Coggins test is a document required to be able to transport their animal across state lines, enter them in a competitive event, or board at someone's barn. But what does the phrase "negative Coggins test" actually mean?

A "Coggins" is a blood test that can only be performed by USDA-approved laboratories and checks for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) antibodies in the blood. EIA is a potentially fatal blood-borne infectious viral disease that is primarily transmitted by biting flies, particularly horseflies—which means that your animals are at risk even if they never travel or live in a closed herd.

The clinical signs of disease can vary dramatically from an acute infection to an inapparent form, but what is important to know is that it produces a persistent infection. Once an animal tests positive for EIA it becomes a lifelong source of disease transmission, so the owner can only choose between quarantine for life or humane euthanasia to ensure that large outbreaks of the disease don’t occur. There is no vaccine and no treatment for EIA.

Take-home message: While a Coggins test is a necessary travel document, don’t forget that it's also first and foremost a way to identify and remove EIA carriers to keep the disease under control.
