We love our dogs and we often show that love through food.

Unfortunately, excess weight in dogs can significantly reduce life expectancy and is one of the leading causes of joint pain, mobility issues, inflammation, and chronic disease. And with nearly two-thirds of dogs in the USA classified as overweight, this has become an incredibly common issue.

As a pet food store, we could simply encourage you to buy more food. But we care far more about the long-term health and quality of life of your dog. A healthy weight matters.

Here’s what we recommend:
1. Start by assessing your dog’s Body Condition Score. Be honest about where they currently fall on the chart — awareness is the first step.
2. Come in for a vet-formulated calorie calculation. We can help determine exactly how much your dog should be eating based on their breed, lifestyle, goals, and the specific food you feed.
3. Feed for their ideal weight and activity level — not necessarily their current weight. This part can require some honesty, but knowing better allows you to do better.
4. Measure meals accurately. Invest in a measuring cup or kitchen scale, so you know exactly how much you’re feeding. Guessing can easily lead to overfeeding.
5. Focus on food quality, not just quantity. Not all kibble is created equal. Look for foods with limited ingredients and lower starch and carbohydrate content. Avoid fillers like corn, soy, and excessive legumes when possible. Fresh food can make a huge difference. We know feeding fully fresh isn’t always realistic for every budget, but even adding 10% fresh food to your dog’s bowl can have meaningful health benefits. Better is always better.
6. Don’t eliminate treats. Treats are part of the bond we share with our dogs, and that matters too. Instead of removing them completely, adjust portion sizes and feeding frequency elsewhere to maintain balance.
