Why Regular Nail Trims Matter for Cats 🐾

At Cats Meow Grooming, we see this more often than most people realize, and many loving cat owners are surprised to learn it can happen.

A common misconception is that scratching posts keep a cat's nails short.

In reality, scratching posts help cats remove the outer nail sheath and keep their nails sharp and healthy — but they do not shorten the nails.

Without regular trimming, a cat's nails can become overgrown and may eventually curl back into the paw pad.

This painful condition can lead to discomfort, difficulty walking, infection, and in severe cases, veterinary treatment to remove the embedded nail.

Why Do Cats Need Regular Nail Trims?

✔ Prevents painful nails from growing into the paw pads

✔ Reduces the risk of infection and veterinary emergencies

✔ Helps cats walk comfortably and maintain proper posture

✔ Protects furniture, clothing, and family members from accidental scratches

✔ Especially important for senior cats, who may not wear their nails down naturally

✔ Indoor cats still need nail trims—they do not wear their nails down enough on carpet or scratching posts

✔ Long nails can snag on blankets, carpeting, and cat trees, causing stress or injury

For most cats, nail trims are recommended every 6–8 weeks, although some cats benefit from more frequent maintenance.

At Cats Meow Grooming, we encourage cat parents to make nail trims part of their cat's regular wellness routine.

A few minutes of preventive care can help avoid a painful problem that many owners never knew was possible.

If you've never trimmed your cat's nails or would like to learn how, we're considering offering a Cat Nail Trimming Class for Owners in the future.

Stay tuned—we'd love to help you feel confident caring for your feline family member! 🐾💕
