Beat the heat! Summer safety tips. ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ”†

๐Ÿ˜ŽAvoid Hot Cars: Never leave pets in an unattended car, even with cracked windows. Temperatures can reach deadly levels within minutes.

๐Ÿ˜ŽAdjust Walk Times: Walk your dog during cooler, off-peak hours (early morning or late evening) to avoid the intense midday sun.

๐Ÿ˜ŽThe "Seven-Second" Rule: Asphalt and concrete retain massive amounts of heat. Test surfaces with the back of your hand for 7 seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

๐Ÿ˜ŽFresh Water Access: Ensure constant access to clean, fresh water. Keep bowls in the shade and refill them frequently, as pets may refuse to drink water that has become hot.

๐Ÿ˜ŽProvide Shade: If pets are outside, always ensure there are well-ventilated, shaded areas for them to retreat to.

๐Ÿ˜ŽSupervise Swimming: Never assume your pet is a natural swimmer. Always supervise them around pools and lakes, and consider outfitting them with a pet life jacket.

๐Ÿ˜ŽPrevent Pests: Summer is peak season for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. Consult your veterinarian to ensure your pet is on up-to-date, year-round preventive medications.

๐Ÿšจ๐ŸšจNew World Screwworm is in Texas!! ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿšจ

Over the last decade, New World Screwworm (NWS) has been moving through Mexico, and we now have confirmed cases in Texas, the most recent being just outside of Fredericksburg.

The difference between NWS and regular fly larvae is that NWS eat HEALTHY tissue, which can have huge implications to our livestock, and potentially our pets.

The most important thing you can do is NOT PANIC. We know it is easy to feel overwhelmed with all of the scary news headlines, so try to keep these things in mind:

๐Ÿพ For our pets, there have been studies that show that newer generation flea and tick medications (Simparica Trio, Credelio, Bravecto, etc.) can act as a preventative for NWS. Now is more important than ever to keep your pets on consistent prevention!

๐ŸŽ NWS does the most damage in wounds that are not being monitored/treated. Remember to check your livestock and pets daily, especially if they have any new wounds. If you are doing daily checks, if there is any NWS infection, you will catch it with plenty of time for treatment.

๐Ÿ“ฒ If you notice anything concerning, please call us with any questions or concerns!

The United States has eradicated New World Screwworm before, and we can do it again. It takes all of us being vigilant, closely monitoring, and calling with anything suspicious!

Every year, World Pet Memorial Day is a time to both look back with love on the pets in our past and help efforts to build a better future for our barking buddies and purring pals who are at risk of never knowing the joy of a pet/parent bond. In honor of a late dog...
