After graduating from Oklahoma State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Lewis spent seven years in emergency medicine in Albuquerque and Austin. For 14 years, Dr. Lewis served as the Medical Director and Chief Surgeon with a local non-profit organization. In 2014, following the sad closure of the non-profit, Dr. Lewis kept the mission alive with the opening of VSS. During his time as

a practicing Veterinary Surgeon, Dr. Lewis has performed over 75,000 spay/neuters and averages approximately 900 specialized surgeries each year.

Before Veterinary Surgical Solutions existed, there was a belief: that no animal should go without care because of cost.

Dr. Lewis has spent decades turning that belief into action. From emergency medicine to performing tens of thousands of surgeries throughout his career, his work has always centered around one thing and that’s giving animals a chance.

In 2014, Veterinary Surgical Solutions was founded to expand that impact, built on a shared vision to make high-quality surgical care more accessible to the community. Since then, our team has provided thousands of surgeries across a wide range of needs, from routine care to complex and life-saving procedures.

This work isn’t just about surgery.

It’s about access.

It’s about compassion.

It’s about showing up for the pets who need it most.

Meet James 🤎

This brave little guy came into rescue with multiple old fractures that left him in quite a bit of pain. Despite everything he’s been through, his spirit hasn’t dimmed one bit. ☀️

Our team performed an FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) on his left hip to help relieve pain and give him better mobility. Unfortunately, his old tibia fracture can’t be surgically corrected at this point - we’ll have to wait and see how that area continues to heal over time.

Even with those challenges, James is all tail wags and gentle kisses. He’s resting comfortably after surgery and soaking up lots of love from his rescue family.

🦴 Sometimes the most challenging cases are the ones that remind us exactly why we do what we do.

This 6-year-old black lab came to us with a severe humerus fracture. The initial recommendation elsewhere was amputation but thanks to the skill and dedication of our surgical team, repair was possible.

The result? A life-changing recovery and a second chance to run, play, and thrive.

Every day, we’re honored to help pets heal through affordable, compassionate care because every family deserves hope, and every pet deserves a chance to live their best life. 💙🐾

Today marks the 10-year anniversary of our manager Marian. She wears many hats, from receptionist to vet tech to HR. Since starting at VSS, her dedication to pet care and deep love for animals has helped shape the clinic and save countless lives. She is respected for her work ethic and intelligence, and loved for her kindness, humor and passion. She treats each patient as if they are her own pet. After checking in with our long time animal welfare advocate and friend Lauralei Combs on behalf of Veterinary Surgical Solutions we were able to make a significant donation to www.pasadenahumane.org. They have been working tirelessly to give refuge, reunite owners with lost pets and provide much needed medical care to those animals injured during ongoing fires.

As a clinic, we remember the sense of overwhelming need we experienced during Texas hurricanes and the time, energy and work required to satisfy the needs of desparate pet owners.

Yesterday we welcomed patient #10,000- Marley! He had a mass removed and powered through like a champ. His little (human) sisters came to drop him off and pick him up, and gave us a card with their beautiful artwork. The team was so touched and grateful to be trusted with this sweet boy’s care! Today marks a significant milestone as we celebrate our 10th anniversary! Serving this community over the past decade has been both an honor and a privilege.

VSS was established to address the lack of affordable surgical options for pet owners in Central Texas, but our impact has extended far beyond. We’ve had the privilege to serve not only the entire state of Texas but many other states as well. The demand for what we do continues to grow, demonstrating the importance of our services.

Over the years we have been pivotal in providing life-saving surgeries and essential medical care, often making the critical difference between euthanasia and treatment for many pets.

For some fun insights, here are the estimates of our top 5 orthopedic procedures performed at VSS over the last 10 years:

• TPLO: 1,917
• Fracture Repairs: 972
• FHO: 503
• TTA: 376
• Lateral Suture: 357

That’s approximately 2,650 CCL surgeries alone, not to mention the countless other orthopedic and soft tissue procedures Dr. Lewis has skillfully performed, significantly improving the quality of life for numerous pets.

Today is bitter sweet as we prepare to say goodbye to our friend and colleague, John. He is a favorite among many here at VSS and we are so sad to see him go. He has dedicated years of his life to caring for our patients and clients alike. He has been instrumental in helping us develop our canine rehabilitation program and assisting our team become who they are today. We will miss the endless laughter, compassion and knowledge that he shared with all of us over the years. The sweet part is that we get to congratulate him on his retirement! We hope he enjoys his newfound freedom and all the adventures coming his way! We will all miss him dearly!
