We are a Veterinary practice dedicated to providing affordable options for surgery and canine rehabilitation. After graduating from Oklahoma State University's College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Lewis spent seven years in emergency medicine in Albuquerque and Austin.
For 14 years, Dr. Lewis served as the Medical Director and Chief Surgeon with a local non-profit organization. In 2014, following the sad closure of the non-profit, Dr. Lewis kept the mission alive with the opening of VSS. During his time as a practicing Veterinary Surgeon, Dr. Lewis has performed over 75,000 spay/neuters and averages approximately 900 specialized surgeries each year.

It is with a very heavy heart that we say goodbye to our beloved patient of 4 years, Abby.
We will miss seeing her every week for PT. Her loving family always did an excellent job in keeping this golden girl happy and healthy.
Our favorite things about Miss Abby were her sassy personality and her beautiful, resilient spirit.

A good ole fashioned spay/neuter day is not something our schedule typically allows for - however, last week we had a very special day for a very special friend and supporter of our program.
In January of this year, Austin Dog Rescue founder Joyce Martin lost her beautiful granddaughter Audrianna. As a way to honor both Audrianna and Joyce our team made a promise to cover all surgery costs for a dog that came into rescue requiring surgery.
In March a very special dog came into Joyce's home - Ellie had a severely infected mammary gland which was surgical removed. A pathology report indicated cancer and normally a follow up procedure would have been scheduled immediately. However, Ellie was carrying puppies so the goal became to let her give birth and as soon as the puppies were weened she could receive what we hoped would be life saving surgery.
Sadly, several days before the procedure was to be schedule her body could no longer hold off the cancer that was taking her life and letting her go was decided as the best thing for her.
As Ellie was to be Audrianna's angel case - we all felt it only fitting that performing the spay/neuters on her kiddos was the very best way to honor everyone.
These pups were a handful to say the least - but a great day for the staff full of smiles and laughter!

March 12th, 2020 we locked our doors for what was supposed to be our annual "spring break" ...
COVID-19 had different plans and with everyone's vacations cancelled we spent that week revamping our entire way of seeing patients and interacting with clients.
Monday, March 23rd we "opened" to a whole new world - over the past thirty-nine working days our team has performed 147 procedures, 100's of "electronic" appointments and a FULL schedule in our rehabilitation department.
Along the way we also held a fundraising event to help support local restaurants and several rescue groups. The results are in ... and with your support, we spent over $2400 with the restaurant partners and raised almost $3500 to help cover the surgery costs for some of Austin's local rescues.
Now, we need a break - the team has worked so hard and Dr. Lewis and I are incredibly thankful to have such a wonderful group of dedicated individuals as part of the team.
We wanted to take a moment to thank KXAN News for all the support they have provided Austin's animal rescue community over the years - they truly are a great friend to the Austin's four legged citizens.
Adapting to the times, north Austin’s Veterinary Surgical Solutions hosted a drive-through pop-up food shop for people and their lovable pups on Saturday.
" I will take a braised short rib dinner from Pink Avocado Catering for my humans and throw a couple extra of those pup cakes from Sprinkles Austin in for me and my sister Georgina"
Other's enjoyed sandwiches and wraps from Otherside Deli and Baby Greens.
If you have any experience with either working in a restaurant or within rescue you know that it is NOT for the faint at heart. Both are incredibly challenging in the "good times" so we really wanted to do something to help these great organizations.
Your support made this event a huge success - we don't have the final numbers as yet, but we do know that we raised enough money to know that at least three of the cases we needed to raise funds for will be able to get those life saving surgeries in the coming weeks.

We are asking everyone to enter the parking lot from McNeil Rd. which is located on the east side of our clinic. McNeil can be accessed by turning east from the traffic light located at Burnet Rd. and Waterford Centre Blvd.
This has allowed us to keep all traffic moving one way so that we can get your food loaded into your car as quickly as possible. You will be asked to exit the parking directly onto Burnet Rd.

Ginny with @austindogrescue had FHO surgery today. She was recently pulled from a shelter with severe pelvic fracture.

Bob dodged a surgery today...he came in to have some stuffed balls removed from his tummy. Updated x-rays showed they were progressing through his intestinal track. He'll continue with fluid therapy and small meals and get rechecked for progress.
Mom and Dad are hopeful as we just repaired his broken leg 8 weeks ago. He's super cute but loves to get into TROUBLE.
Yesterday we were contacted by a client who has used our clinic for multiple surgeries on all their dogs - their 10 year old Husky was receiving supported care for a foreign body obstruction and needed surgery ASAP. We never like to say no, however the best option we had was to reschedule our calendar for surgery the following day. This was not ideal and so we joined the family in making calls to other clinics to see if she could receive life saving surgery that day.
We want to give a very grateful shoot out to New Hope Animal Hospital and their team who stepped up to save a life. We received word last night that surgery went well and a full recovery was expected.
