Forgotten Friends Mixed Breed Rescue

Forgotten Friends Mixed Breed Rescue Forgotten Friends is a 501 c (3) Austin, Texas-based rescue group, relying solely on donations. Volunteer with Us !!

WHAT WE DO

After rescuing animals from participating shelters, Forgotten Friends:
-provides a health exam with a participating veterinarian, including heartworm testing,
-provides the rabies shot and yearly vaccinations,
-dental, heartworm treatment and any other care needed,
-has the animals spayed or neutered, and
-provides the animals with monthly heartworm medication. (Heartworm disease can

be deadly, but is preventable if dogs are given once-a-month chewable heartworm pills.) They are then allowed time to adjust and become accustomed to a foster family environment (when one is available) before being adopted into their new home that is a good match for family and dog. http://www.volunteermatch.org/search/org41846.jsp

Austin area adoptions only. TRIXIE came to our rescue with two other siblings from a Texas kill shelter. Her mom is a dachshund mix and we do not know what breed dad is but we think it is a Jack Russell terrier mix. She has the spots of a Dalmatian and a left eye "patch." How cute can this be? Trixie is so precious and a sheer delight to foster. She is smart, loyal, and affectionate. Loves to play fetch. She will scratch my leg to tell me to throw her another toy. What is unusual for this puppy is that she waits to go outside before doing her "stuff." She loves my grassy backyard and tries to chase a squirrel or two. But she also loves being inside and laying close to me. Gives great kisses too with her puppy breath. She passed crate training at night time only, as she doesn't whine at all. If I have room for another dog, I will personally adopt her. Trust me, she is unbelievably great!!

We prefer homes with a secure fence and children over 5 years.

The $350 adoption fee covers the vet exam, age-appropriate vaccines, medication, microchip, and a future spay.

PSA🌪⛈💨STORMS ARE COMING AGAIN!!
Make sure to secure and check all gates and fencing before letting your dog outside and it's always a great idea to put them on a leash when outside in case they get spooked!

We are in a heat advisory. Please keep your pets safe and review the following tips:
* Pets can dehydrate quickly, so keep plenty of fresh, clean water available.
* Make sure outside animals have access to shade and do not over exercise them.
*Know the symptoms of overheating in pets: excessive panting, difficulty breathing, increased heart rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse.
*Animal with flat faces such as Pugs, French Bulldogs and Persian cats are more susceptible to heat stroke.
*Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle unattended, the temperature can become deadly within minutes.
*Do not leave your pet unattended around a pool.
*Dogs with shaved coats need to be protected from sunburn.
*Do not let your dog linger on hot asphalt. Their bodies can heat up quickly absorbing heat from the road and their paw pads can burn.

Initiative 145 is dangerous for Colorado pets. When it comes to your pet’s safety and well-being, even routine procedures can become complicated. If passed, Initiative 145 would allow someone with inadequate training to perform surgery on your pet.

URGENT CODE RED! If you want shelters to be No Kill then you need to adopt. In our Country these days we live in a disposable society. It is not these dogs who put themselves into a shelter, it was the people who promised them a forever home.

This shelter is in San Antonio, they are always full, we are just sharing to help people see a part of the reality of abandoning pets thinking they will be adopted and, sadly, some do not care.

Effective tomorrow, July 2, we have made the very difficult decision to close intake. Exceptions will be made for animals with life-threatening illness or injury, or those that present a clear public safety risk. Previously scheduled appointments will still be honored; no further appointments will be scheduled at this time.

If you find a sick or injured animal:

1. Call 311, advise them that you need assistance with a sick or injured animal and ask to speak with an Animal Protection Officer.

2. Wait for an Animal Protection Officer to pick up the animal. Do not bring the animal to the shelter.

If you have found a loose pet that is not injured, please visit our Lost and Found Pet website for guidance: bit.ly/lostfoundaac

We did not make this decision lightly.

Post-pandemic life looks very different in animal welfare. Shelters everywhere are struggling; adoptions have slowed down, particularly for dogs. The average length of stay for dogs since 2019 has doubled nationally, and it’s no different for us. Our average length of stay for all dogs in 2019 was 19 days. This year, it is 37.8 days.

In the past few months we have:

- Filled two temp positions to help with our foster program.

- Offered rescue partners $500 to pull any medium/large dog, $250 for a small dog, and $50 per cat.

- Contracted extra days with a high volume spay/neuter veterinarian to expedite surgeries for adoptable animals.

- Launched a VIP adoption program to provide an option similar to foster-to-adopt.

- Put 24 dogs in boarding at a cost of $5-6,000 per week since the end of April.

- Launched a finder-to-foster program.

Adoption fees have been waived since June 2023.

On July 18th, we will have an item in front of City Council to approve a contract with another organization (in addition to our contract with Emancipet) to provide more community spay/neuter services.

We need your help, Austin. Achieving the level of no-kill that we do (over 95% live release rate) is simply not possible without our community’s assistance.
