Bloodhound Grooming Tip of the Week: Defunk dog regularly in between baths.

It is not possible (for me) to bathe my hound enough to keep him de-stinked. So I've come up with a routine that we follow for the in between bath times. Hot water mixed with a sq**rt of lemon or 2. Take a rag and get wet with mixture. Rub face, but watch the eyes. Rinse and repeat. Rub external ear flaps. Rinse and repeat. Body. Feet. Tail. Rinse and repeat. This seems to keep him happy and less stinky. The lemon juice rec was from another bloodhound owner - and it seems to do nicely!

What's your dog's favorite, most motivating, reward? Food, toy or otherwise :) My old guy (Blue, for those who know my pack) loves his filled food toy more than the food or the toy by itself. So Kong Wobbler with dinner kibble makes the top 3 for him. How about your pups?

Question for the dog lovers out there: What gets you motivated to get out and train with your dog?

I like the structure of class. Without class, I like to have some high-level end goal in mind. For example, a title or a certification. For my search dog, I like to have component goals (a set of behaviors or a behavior chain).

How about you? :)

I frequently emphasize to my clients the importance of communicating desired behaviors to their dogs - not just what they don't want. Michael Baugh, a licensed FAR instructor and trainer out of the Houston area, has done a much better job of this than I in his blog entry, The Nonsense of No. Thank you, Michael!
