In Loving Memory of Dr. Jorga Brown
By Dr. Alfredo J. Geigel-Ortiz
I first met Jorga in July 2018. At first, she seemed intimidating - and then, in no time, we discovered our shared passion for surgery and became an inseparable team. We had one guiding principle in common: Pets come first. No matter what. That bond defined our work and our friendship.
Together, we fought for our patients and gave our best every day to keep them healthy and happy. Even as she approached retirement in 2023, our mutual respect only grew stronger. Our clients felt it too - they appreciated how united we were in purpose and in care.
Jorga wasn't just loved by our clients, though. She was part of my family. My daughter Beatriz, who dreams of becoming a veterinarian, absolutely adored her. My son Dominic played chess with her every time he visited the hospital and if she had time. I still remember when he finally beat her at just 8 years old - she smiled and said, "Wow, I just got beaten by a very young man!"
Jorga supported me not only as a colleague but as a father. She made sure I had time to travel to Puerto Rico with my kids - something my children never forgot. They even thanked her personally, and that gesture meant the world to her.
She also supported me through one of the hardest challenges in my life - when I suffered a severe injury to my right hand, cutting all the tendons. I feared my surgical career might be over. But Jorga recommended laser therapy, and thanks to her guidance and the surgery, I made a full recovery. Even the surgeon remarked how rare that was. Her advice saved my hand - and my calling.
Jorga was a quiet force. An introvert who kept her personal life private, but at work, she was a powerhouse. She rolled up her sleeves, took on the hardest cases, and never hesitated. I'll never forget her saying she'd never do fish surgery after watching me do it - we laughed, but the respect between us was real.
On Sunday - May the Fourth - the force truly gained a fierce protector of the animals she loved so deeply.
Our clients, all the pets she cared for, my family, and the entire team at Companion Animal Hospital will miss her tremendously.
