Today, we pause to remember the pets who left paw prints on our hearts and changed our lives forever.

⚠️ New World Screwworm: What Pet Owners Need to Know ⚠️

New World Screwworm (NWS) is a parasitic fly whose larvae (maggots) feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals, including pets. Female flies lay eggs in wounds or body openings, and once the eggs hatch, the larvae can cause severe, painful tissue damage that worsens quickly.

🐾 Signs to watch for:
• Maggots visible in a wound, ears, nose, eyes, mouth, or other body openings
• Wounds that rapidly worsen
• Foul odor from a wound
• Bleeding or discharge from an affected area

The best protection is prevention. We strongly recommend keeping all dogs and cats on monthly parasite prevention products that are FDA-approved to treat New World Screwworm:

With summer temperatures regularly reaching the upper 90s and 100s, pets can develop heat stroke much faster than many owners realize.

Watch for signs of overheating:
🐾 Excessive panting
🐾 Drooling
🐾 Weakness or lethargy
🐾 Vomiting
🐾 Collapse

Help keep your pet safe:
💧 Provide plenty of fresh water and shade
🌅 Walk during cooler morning or evening hours
🐾 Check pavement before walks—it can burn paw pads
🏠 Bring pets inside during peak heat
🚗 Never leave a pet in a parked car

If you think your pet may be suffering from heat stroke, seek veterinary care immediately. Quick action can save their life.

Hot summer pavement can burn your pet’s paw pads faster than you might think ☀️🐾

If the pavement feels too hot for the back of your hand for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws. Asphalt and concrete can quickly cause painful burns, especially during the hottest parts of the day.

To help keep your pets safe this summer:
• Walk during early mornings or evenings
• Stick to grass or shaded paths when possible
• Watch for limping or excessive paw licking after walks
• Never leave pets standing on hot pavement

A little extra caution can help keep those paws happy and healthy all summer long!

Rio was feeling pretty skeptical during his visit, but technician Taja met him exactly where he was — with patience, kindness, and plenty of trust-building along the way. By the end of their time together, Rio was much more comfortable, and we’re so proud of the gentle care Taja gave him. 💙

Every pet is different, but going to the vet can be scary and taking the time to make them feel safe matters to us. Great job, Taja, and way to go, Rio! 🐾
