A harmful algae bloom occurs when cyanobacteria, also called blue-green algae, produce toxins. Lady Bird Lake experienced a harmful algae bloom in 2019, which sickened and killed several dogs. Algae in Lady Bird Lake possible cause of death for at least two dogs. The city is strongly advising pet owners to keep their pets out of the water.

Additional testing from the city of Austin has revealed increased levels of neurotoxins in algae at Auditorium Shores, Red Bud Isle and Barton Creek.

Reminder to keep your dogs safe in this heat, especially since Lady Bird Lake is currently unsafe for pups! Remember to stay in the shade, check if the pavement is hot before walking there, and limit outdoor activity.
