update - "When our 18 year old chi mix passed, the grief and quiet house were unbearable. I knew we had to help another dog and I searched far and wide for the best fit.

When I saw Ricky, I knew he was the one. But when I went to see him, I learned that he was part of a bonded pair with an older female pup named Foxy (now Roxie).

We only wanted one dog, but Roxie stole our heart and we took both of them home. We did DNA tests on both of them and learned that Roxie is Ricky’s mother!

Ricky had heart worms, but we went through the treatment and he is in the peak of health now!

I will say that these two are the love of our lives. They are beautiful, smart, sweet and so happy!

They have completed our family. They are the best!"

Thanks for adopting and for sharing your story!!

If you have an Austin Animal Center adoption story you want to share with us and the rest of the internet, send an email to [email protected] with some pictures/videos and an update.

courtesy post – Luna is a 10-year-old lap cat looking for a home where she can truly relax and feel at peace.

This extremely friendly girl loves to be held, cuddled, and will happily nap by your side for hours. She’s active, playful, and craves windows, sunbeams, and a bit more space.

She used to be an outdoor cat and, unfortunately, her current situation isn’t meeting her needs. She’s been showing signs of stress from being so disconnected from the outside world. Her caregiver believes she’d thrive in a quieter home with more room, more sunshine, and more companionship.

Luna has lived with other cats, young children, and elderly family members.

Rehoming Luna through the home-to-home network helps to keep pets out of the overcrowded shelter and makes space for other animals in crisis.

If you think she could be your next best friend, contact her current caregiver through the link:

🐱 Thirteen cats arrived at the shelter from a single home—all at once. One overwhelmed caregiver trying to do their best, and suddenly our cat kennels were full.

Situations like this happen fast, and as the city shelter, we’re obligated to help. When we take in a large group like this, it sends ripples through the entire shelter—kennels fill, resources stretch, and staff scramble to adjust routines, medical care, and housing.

This is what we’re here for—but it’s not easy. These 13 cats are now safe and getting the care they need, but they’re also a reminder of how quickly things can shift.

We need your help to make room. If you can foster or adopt, now is the time. Each pet that leaves the shelter opens a space for the next one in need!

Apply to foster online or in person any day from 11am-7pm!

Hoku (6257), Pooh Bear (6582), and Pirata (6282) are just three of the HUNDREDS of dogs currently at Austin Animal Center.

🏃‍♀️ Hoku is a zoomy, treat-loving smarty who loves cuddles and would thrive as someone’s adventure buddy.

🐾 Pooh Bear is a curious, goofy pup who carries around empty jugs like treasures and just wants someone to show him the ropes.

🌻 Pirata is a sweet pup who lived outdoors his whole life—he’s shy, but gentle, and is warming up to getting love.

We’re over capacity, and the perfect pup for you is already here—just waiting to be found!

Open daily from 11am-7pm.

🎉 Reunited and it feels so good!

These sweet pups made it back home thanks to one (really) little thing: a microchip.

After getting called in through 311 an Animal Protection Officer was able to pick them up. We scanned their chips for info, contacted their family, and just like that—back where they belong.

Most lost pets are found close to home, but they can't tell us where they live. Microchips give your pet a voice when they need it most—and keeping your contact info up to date is key for a fast reunion!

Don’t have one yet? AAC offers free microchips for Austin's pets! Come visit us any day from 11am-7pm.

Peep (6523) came to us in rough shape—underweight and likely abandoned. Despite her tough start, she’s been nothing but affectionate, easygoing, and full of charm.

This two-year-old Great Dane mix is house-trained, walks beautifully on leash, and already knows several commands like sit, stay, come, and shake. In the play yard, she loves tossing her toys and soaking up attention. Volunteers describe her as a “gentle giant” who’s always happy for a break from her kennel and some cuddle time.

Peep has shown friendly curiosity with other social dogs along the fence line, and with slow, thoughtful introductions, she enjoys canine companionship.

Right now, she’s just looking for a safe, loving home where she can continue to gain weight, confidence, and comfort.

Come see why everyone’s falling for Peep, any day from 11am-7pm!

Shelter dogs need more than just food and walks—they need ways to stay mentally engaged!

With the shelter over capacity, there's more time between kennel breaks, and boredom can take a toll. Enrichment treats and toys help our dogs stay happier and less stressed while they wait for homes.

Donations of things like puzzle toys, peanut butter, and enrichment treats go a long way in making their days a little brighter!

Meet Peter (6539)—a 6-year-old Desperate House Cat with a big personality!

When Peter arrived at the shelter in April, he had a large wound on his side. But with time, care, and a cozy foster home, he’s healing great.

He loves to cuddle and will happily settle into your lap or lounge across the couch. In the evenings, he gets a little burst of energy and is always up for chasing his favorite string toy. He’s affectionate, playful, and full of charm!

Adoption fees are waived for Peter and all other desperate house cats.

Contact his foster to meet him! Meet other DHC's in the shelter any day from 11am-7pm!

Laurel (8732) just arrived at the shelter with her seven two-week-old puppies—and this is no place to raise a family.

She’s been calm, friendly, and an incredibly attentive mama so far. But what she really needs now is a safe, quiet foster home where she can care for her pups in peace.

This is a big foster ask—we get it. Keeping a family of eight together for the next 6–8 weeks is a lot. But if you can commit through late June (until the pups are eating on their own), we’ll take it from there and begin splitting them into smaller foster groups.

We’ll provide everything you need: food, medical care, puppy pads, an x-pen, and ongoing support.

Laurel needs:

-A low-traffic space with no other pets

-A secure, dog-proof yard (puppies will be unvaccinated for a while)

-Supervision outside—she may be a flight risk

-Someone ready to help these pups grow into confident, adoptable dogs

📩 Email [email protected] with "Laurel 8732" in the subject line if you can foster this sweet family!
