Huey (5971) has been waiting at the shelter for 142 days and is on our Urgent Placement list. Once nervous, he's now a happy, 45-pound pup who can’t wait to get outside, grab a toy, and stretch his legs.

Volunteers love his goofy zoomies and the way he leans in for butt scratches, which they say is his “sweet spot."

He is a mostly loose-leash walker and doesn’t pay much attention to other dogs but has shown some dog reactivity in his own space.

Huey can be shy with new people and really benefits from slow introductions.

After 142 days, he’s ready to leave the shelter behind and settle into his forever home.

Meet Huey, and hundreds of other adoptable pets, any day at the Austin Animal Center from 11–7!

Right now, there are 362 dogs at the Austin Animal Center.

299 of them are waiting for adoption, right now.

We don’t have enough kennels for all of them, so dogs are living in crates in hallways and offices. 😭

Every adoption or foster makes space for another pet with nowhere else to go.

Come meet your new best friend today!

update - "We fostered our girl “Moo” last summer when you were at capacity. She was getting dropped off by someone that found her in the road and unfortunately you didn’t have space for her.

When we got home, she was frozen in terror for a week, then eventually started warming up enough to let us within 3 feet of her. We kept her for a month and then she (very unexpectedly) had a puppy.

Unfortunately it was just one and it didn’t make it. I had an 8 month old baby then and Moo came home from the hospital frantically looking for her baby until ultimately deciding that Miles was hers.

Fast forward a year, she is like free childcare. She follows him everywhere he goes, herds him away from places she doesn’t want him to go and is his personal jungle gym.

We had a great experience with you guys throughout the foster and adoption process. She is our angel dog"

Thanks for adopting and for sharing your story!!

If you have an Austin Animal Center adoption story you want to share with us and the rest of the internet, send an email to [email protected] with some pictures/videos and an update.

courtesy post – Meet Moose, a 7-month-old giant Angora rabbit with a personality as big as his floppy ears! 🐇✨

Moose has a puppy dog personality. He’ll follow you around the house, beg sweetly for lettuce, and soak up all the attention he can get. He’s litter-trained, crate-trained, and comes with everything you’ll need to welcome him home (cage, food, toys, grooming supplies, and more).

Like all Angoras, Moose will need regular brushing, several times a week. He thrives with gentle handling, enjoys being around kids, and loves toys, treats, and exploring his surroundings.

Rehoming through the Home-to-Home network helps keep pets out of the shelter and makes space for animals with no other options.

❤️UPDATE: All of these cute puppies have been placed in foster homes. THANK YOU for responding in such a big way!👏🏻 There are still lots of dogs that need a home, come on by!🐶❤️

Two litters of abandoned puppies were dumped here yesterday, but we are out of space, so they are living in cubicles right now. 🐶💔

Puppies need space to play, learn, and thrive—not to spend their first weeks of life behind a desk.

We urgently need adopters and fosters to help get them into homes where they belong!

Apollo (14857) just arrived two days ago—but because we’re over capacity, he’s been living in a crate in our conference room. 💔

This sweet pup deserves a real home. Come foster or adopt today and help us make space for other animals in need.

There are 0 open kennels for dogs anywhere at the Austin Animal Center. 💔

We have 14 dogs in crates in the hall, 6 in the multipurpose room, and two BIG litters of puppies in cubicles.

The only way to make more space is for dogs to leave with fosters and adopters.

If you’ve been thinking about it—now is the time. Every dog that leaves opens a kennel for another in need!

Almost five years old, Zeus (8495) has been through a lot of change lately. Once living in a home with children and even cats, he’s now here at the shelter looking for a fresh start.

Volunteers describe Zeus as a sweet, easygoing dog who walks well on leash, enjoys puzzle toys, and loves leaning in for affection. He’s playful too—fetch and tug of war are some of his favorite games. While the shelter can make him a little jumpy at times, staff believe he’ll settle nicely once back in a home.

What shines through most is Zeus’s eagerness to connect. Whether he’s trotting happily on a walk or stretched out with a chew toy, he’s happiest just being near his people.

Meet Zeus and hundreds of other pets any day at Austin Animal Center from 11–7!

It's National Wildlife Day! 🌎🦔

Here in Austin, we share our city with some amazing wild neighbors—from armadillos and owls to coyotes and turtles.

The best way you can celebrate is by respecting wild animals from a distance and letting them stay wild.

If you see injured or sick wildlife in Austin, call 3-1-1 so our Animal Protection Officers can respond safely.

We talk about it a lot, and you might be asking yourself… what is a Desperate Housecat?

They’re the comeback cats of AAC, who need a little extra help finding homes—seniors (7+), cats with medical needs, shy cats, or those who’ve had a rough start before coming to the shelter.

They’ve got stories to tell, love to give, and just need the right person to live life with!

Come meet a Desperate Housecat at AAC, any day, from 11-7! 🐱
