Kai has to be involved in training, and he is always doing the cue and ready for his reward.

A smart dog is never going to pass up a good opportunity !

The only way to keep him out of the way is using this pen, or crating him while he watches, but he gets rewarded intermittently !

It works out great!!

Feeling proud of Bridie all four pounds and her bravery!

She had never spent time around other dogs - and would go on the attack.

At our Board and Train, with proper positive introductions, she got along with Kai and another younger pup. She left here more confident and relaxed. Her mom was saying just how calm she was upon her return!

No one intends to let their dog overheat.

Take from me. In Miami, when Kai was a puppy he collapsed on me. I was panicked… alone at a park with him. I found two gentlemen talking in a bench and yelled for help.

In Austin, when Kai was 5 years old, he was on a short potty walk, followed by a few frisbee throws( I am talking 15 mins max). Kai collapsed! Firest he became unstable on his fee (wobbly) and uncontrollably went nuts over the frisbee like he was frantic.

I knew what to do but again I was alone until I saw a girl walking. I yelled at her for help and asked her to please bring me as much cold water as possible.

This happens when you least expect it.

I’ve met countless clients who tell me their frightening stories.

There’s oftentimes an undermining UNKNOWN medical reason like exercise-induced hyperthermia or exercise-induced collapse.

Look for signs, and just if you must walk your dog in the summer heat of Texas, keep it super short and shade hop—try to avoid this type of stress on your dog. Heat stress and injury are hard on their bodies, puppies included.

Heat exhaustion in dogs is a serious condition that can lead to heat stroke if untreated. This summer make sure your dog has shade and water.

Meet Leo, a 2 ½-year-old Boxer Mix who found his forever home through Austin Pets Alive! when he was 3 months old. He's an adored member of a bustling household, sharing his space with human and aquatic siblings. Leo is affectionate and remarkably intelligent. He effortlessly mastered commands like sit, shake, and lay down all before starting his private, at-home sessions, showcasing his love for learning!

Recently, Leo has been diligently working on overcoming his fence reactivity, striving to remain calm when other dogs pass his yard. He's also focused on enhancing his confidence and refining his manners while enjoying loose-leash walking. Furthermore, Leo is determined to break his habit of snatching socks, hats, or paper towels and making a run for it. With unwavering dedication and positive reinforcement, Leo continues flourishing and evolving into an even more poised and well-mannered companion!

Reactive Dog Facts:
According to Veterinarian Karen Overall, "Reactive dogs respond to normal stimuli with a higher-than-normal level of intensity. The behaviors [used] to ascertain reactivity (or arousal) are alertness, restlessness, vocalization, systemic effects, displacement behaviors, and changes in solicitous behaviors.”

Reactivity is very common: Research shows that about 72% of dog owners say they have a dog that shows some signs of reactivity.

Let’s give Bear a warm welcome to the Fetch Worthy Family! Bear is a striking 4-year-old mix of Bernese Mountain Dog and Husky, boasting a unique blend of DNA. According to Kim Brophey, CDBC, CPDT-KA, Bear is a guarding dog (Bernese Mountain) and a natural dog (Husky). Due to this mix, Bear embodies intelligence, high energy, a calm demeanor, and an easy-going nature.

Adopted into a loving human family, Bear also finds companionship with Ruby, his 19-year-old feline friend. Bear has already shown remarkable progress in his training by focusing on loose-leash walking, proper greetings at home and outside, settling in place, playing fetch, and managing his reactivity towards strangers through barking and heightened emotions. His owners are committed to helping him achieve a sense of calmness at home and in environments like the vet’s office. Let's give a round of applause for their unwavering dedication!

Fun Fact: Kim Brophey categorizes dog breeds into 10 Groups based on their original purpose, behavioral inclinations, and morphological features: Bull, Guardian, Gun Dog, Herding, Natural, Scenthound, Sighthound, Terrier, Toy, and World Dog. Learn more here at The Dog Door.

Please warmly welcome Wiggle as she joins the Fetch Worthy Family! Wiggle is a delightful 2-year-old (nearing three years) who boasts an adorable yet regal blend of Pit, Chow, Lab, and Shepherd, with her mom's hound-like appearance clearly shining through. Rescued and adopted through Love Of All Dogs, a NYC-based organization dedicated to saving dogs from Puerto Rico, Wiggle's journey has been nothing short of adventurous.

And the adventure hasn’t stopped! She often accompanies her owner on countryside escapades and enjoys playdates with local pals at parks like Walnut Creek. Wiggle's fondness for food puzzles adds more fun to her routine. She's diligently working on addressing guarding tendencies, managing over-arousal during play, and mastering the art of loose-leash walking. Here's to many more wag-tastic adventures ahead, Wiggles!

FACT: Did you know that approximately 3.1 million dogs enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide yearly, AND 2 million are adopted every single year? Approximately 44% of all households in the United States own a dog. Source: ASPCA

Marzipan, also known as Marz in inner circles, is a sweet, smarty pants 5-month-old Bernedoodle adopted by a dedicated family, who are all doing a fantastic job getting ahead of her puppy training. Before they began private in-home lessons, they started with positive reinforcement training with the help of Zak George's YouTube Channel!

Currently, she’s working on polite and calm greetings, becoming more confident in being alone, not begging at the table during mealtime, drop it, and recall, on top of basic puppy training like potty training, settling into place, and stay. With such a supportive family and an intelligent pup as eager as Marz, the sky's the limit!

Tips for Handling an Over-Excited Puppy:
-If you notice your puppy suddenly shifting from a calm state to exhibiting behaviors like zoomies (uncontrolled running in circles or back and forth), jumping, mouthing, nipping, barking, or spinning, it's a sign of overexcitement.
Here's what you can do:
-Stay calm yourself. Avoid fueling their excitement.
-Provide your puppy with an appropriate outlet for their energy.
-Reward calm behavior to reinforce positive behaviors.
-Reflect on what caused the overexcitement - such as encountering a new stimulus, engaging in an activity, or anxiously anticipating something - to manage it better in the future.

By following these steps, you can help your puppy learn to manage their excitement in a healthy, positive manner.

Let's extend a big congratulations to the owner of Cosmo, a 16-month-old King Charles Cavalier, and the foster parent of Baxter, a 10-year-old Brussels Griffon, for their remarkable progress and unwavering dedication to their training efforts.

Both dogs have shown tremendous improvement and noteworthy breakthroughs in managing their reactivity towards other dogs. Their journey is marked by a reduction in reactivity and a notable increase in calmness. Keep up the fantastic work, everyone!

Baxter has been training with us for the past month and is up for adoption through the National Brussels Griffon Rescue. Interested in adopting Baxter? Reach out to his rescue - National Brussels Griffon Rescue, Inc.

Tips for Reactive Dogs:
-Engage in Play
Dogs who enjoy fetch or frisbee often become absorbed in play, making them less susceptible to distractions. Additionally, they form positive associations with triggers, which signifies an opportunity for enjoyable play.

-Establish a Consistent Routine
Like humans, maintaining a structured routine can alleviate uncertainties in a dog's daily routine, ultimately reducing anxiety levels.

Introducing Dolly! This one-year-old mixed-breed sweetheart was discovered roaming the streets and found her forever home through Austin Pets Alive!

Welcomed with open arms, Dolly quickly befriended her new human and furry companions, Olive, a 12-year-old Silver Lab, and Disco, a 5-year-old Border Collie. With her people- and pet-friendly nature, she quickly settled into her new environment.

Dolly has been diligently refining her skills, including recall, off-leash reliability, managing her heightened prey drive, and mastering loose-leash walking. She joined the Fetch Worthy family earlier this year, graduating from our Basic Manners & Obedience Group class and receiving private in-home lessons.

Because of their dedication to managing her prey-drive instincts, Dolly's owners have decided to continue her training with our Maintain Plan. In the coming months, she will continue strengthening her skills and fine-tuning her training sessions by learning to stare at prey without reacting or catching.

Let's applaud Dolly and her family for their unwavering dedication to her growth and development in her new, loving home!

More on Prey Drive:
-Prey drive is a dog’s innate desire to chase and capture prey.
-Any dog can exhibit prey drive behaviors, not just those bred for hunting or herding.
-Prey drive can be helpful in agility training, herding, or training dogs for military or police jobs.
-Prey drive becomes problematic when it poses risks to people, other animals, or themselves.
-Pet parents must manage their dog’s behavior to prevent accidents resulting from this behavior.

Thanks Dolly for helping Baxter!

We were able to practice behavior modification at a local park! I prefer training outdoors in nature (when appropriate) as much as possible. One factor that makes it difficult is lack of control of the environment so picking a time of day that’s less busy is important.

We always have a back up plan!

Thankfully, most dog guardians see were training and voluntarily give us space!

Please join us in congratulating Pinto on completing his private in-home lessons! Pinto, a charming 3-year-old Border Collie-Cattle Dog Mix, who traveled all the way from Mexico to find his forever home through Addicus' Legacy Dog Rescue.

Pinto's story is as captivating as he is. Formerly living with an unhoused owner who was a beloved figure in the village, Pinto's tale took a turn when his owner passed away. Now, village residents are honoring their bond with a mural commemorating them both.

Having lived as an outdoor, free-range dog in his previous life, Pinto is now adjusting to life indoors. He's also focusing on building trust, communication, and mastering basic recall skills with his new family. Previously fearful of cars, he's making strides in overcoming his anxieties and adapting to his new life, which includes living alongside a cat.

In their debut as dog owners, the entire family is doing an exceptional job welcoming Pinto into their home and hearts. Here's to the beginning of a beautiful journey together!

FUN FACT: More than 2/3 of U.S. households share their homes with cats and dogs. 186 million cats and dogs live in 86 million households. 22% of households are multi-pet and have cats and dogs, just like Pinto’s new home!

Meet Ruby, the delightful 7-month-old Bernedoodle who was welcomed into a loving family with open arms. Ruby's training sessions are an absolute blast - her playful spirit and sharp intellect keep her humans on their toes!

Ruby is currently enrolled in our Puppy Training Program and is nearing graduation. Ruby has been focusing on mastering essential puppy basics, curbing the habit of jumping on guests, perfecting her recall, and mastering sit-stays.

It's crucial to start training early to prevent the development of serious behavioral issues down the road. During the critical 16-week socialization window, puppies like Ruby are most receptive to new experiences. This period offers a golden opportunity to shape positive neural pathways, fostering well-rounded socialization and creating lasting positive associations with their environment.

Let's celebrate Ruby's graduation from our Puppy Training Program and commend her on her progress!

FACT: Did you know puppies reach their full size between 12 and 24 months old, and smaller dog breeds mature faster than larger ones? You can estimate how big your puppy will be by its paw size. Generally, the larger the paw, the larger the dog. While this isn’t always foolproof, it’s a reasonable estimate.

Meet Ziggy, a handsome 2-year-old Standard Poodle rescued from Doodle Dandy Rescue and embraced by a warm and affectionate family. With his quick wit, playful nature, and striking good looks, Ziggy steals hearts wherever he goes.

Currently, Ziggy is integrating into his new home, mastering polite greetings, curbing nipping tendencies, and cultivating calmness around his two older fur siblings. This boy’s enthusiasm for learning knows no bounds, and he thrives on positive reinforcement.

We're thrilled to be part of Ziggy's growth through our at-home private lessons and can't wait to witness his remarkable progress!

TIP: Homes with three or more dogs can often confuse new dogs, who may not know what to expect. Predictable routines at home can help your new dog adjust to its new home.
