It has been said that a farrier should be a horseman first and a horseshoer second.
To understand hoof balance, we must first understand horses. Their gaits, their anatomy, their specific tack for various disciplines, and how to affect the horse through a trim and shoeing to give the desired effect.
In the art of farriery, sound principles have changed very little over the centuries. One of the fundamentals that remains constant is the desire to first do no harm to the horse.
I personally find the horse to be majestic and magnificent. It has carried and served man for thousands of years. Only in the last 100 years has the horse been replaced as the principle means of land transportation, but many of us still look to our beloved equine friends for recreation and relaxation.
It has also been said that if you sit with a horse quietly, it will show you its heart. Sit with a horse kindly, it will show you yours!
