VETERINARY PRACTICES: IT’S TIME TO GET EDUCATED ABOUT FIP. WHAT IS FIP?

FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis) is a serious, potentially life-threatening inflammatory disease caused when feline coronavirus mutates inside a cat's body, triggering an abnormal immune response that can affect multiple organs. This is NOT FIV (feline AIDS)

CAT FAMILIES: IT’S TIME TO HELP US BRING VETERINARIANS UP TO SPEED ON FIP.

We need to have a serious conversation. Stray Haven is seeing a dramatic increase in FIP cases.

Far too many pet owners and rescuers are still reaching out to veterinary practices for help with a suspected or confirmed FIP diagnosis, only to hear: “We don’t treat FIP.”

And then what?

FIP was once considered a death sentence. Today, we have widely available antiviral treatments that have dramatically changed the prognosis for these cats. There is published research, evolving treatment protocols, and veterinary resources available.

We understand that not every practice will have the experience or resources to manage an FIP case. But not treating FIP and not knowing where to send a patient are two very different things.

At a minimum, every veterinary practice should:

• Understand that FIP is now treatable.
• Recognize common signs and diagnostic indicators.
• Know where to find current treatment information.
• Have referral contacts for veterinarians experienced in FIP.
• Avoid unnecessary delays when FIP is strongly suspected. Delays are deadly
• Support owners rather than leaving them to navigate a potentially life-threatening diagnosis alone.

We are losing precious time when families are told there is nothing that can be done.

Veterinary medicine evolves. Continuing education is part of the responsibility that comes with caring for our animals.

You don’t have to be an FIP specialist. But you do need to know that help exists.

Please share this with veterinary practices, technicians, rescue organizations, and anyone who works with cats.

FIP is treatable. Education saves lives.

😻Happy National Cat day😻 from our Foster family! We have several kitties looking for their Furever home!
😻Lyric is our momma cat! This beauty is still playful & gets along well with our cats! She was a young mom still just 1-2yrs old so she comes running to play with all the kittens!!!

🐈‍⬛Blues is Lyric’s baby. He is a sleek, lean, wild kitty!! He loves to play in the water! And He loves attention & vocally lets you know he wants pets!!

🖤🖤Rico & Lola are 6 month old siblings. They are shy but they will forget that if you offer them a churu! They love to wrestle & play! They will need someone with patience with them because they do get scared easily but once they trust you they are super sweet!

😻😻and then there’s are tabby twin sisters, Kish & Brooke! These two girls are very curious & fun! They are also the biggest snuggle bugs. They love to cuddle up after a playing hard! They are the perfect pair & would love to stay together forever.

Never Adopted! Fantastic pup - Growing up in Rescue!

🐾 Meet Your Future Best Friend! 🐾

At just 5 months old, this sweet boy is ready to leave rescue life behind and find a family to call his own! ❤️

He’s growing into a wonderful young pup who is good with cats, dogs and kids. Completely crate trained and we can almost say he is potty trained. He has so much love to give and a whole lifetime of adventures waiting ahead of him.

He may have spent his early months growing up in rescue, but now it’s his turn to experience the love, comfort, and security of a forever home. He’s ready for a family who will help him continue to learn, grow, and discover just how wonderful life can be.

🐾❤️ WELCOME WEDNESDAY! ❤️🐾
18 Dogs, One Busy Transport, and a Family Finally Safe!

Another Wednesday, another transport, and another 18 precious lives on board! Today we brought home 12 dogs for Stray Haven and 6 for one of our partnering rescues, Tails of Hope!

🐾 MEET OUR NEWEST ARRIVALS!

❤️ Fisher Tzu & Gypsy Tzu – These adorable 2-year-old Shih Tzu/Pug mixes are as sweet and friendly as they come! Fisher is our handsome boy, and Gypsy is our lovely little lady.

❤️ Miss PJ – A young adult Beagle/Shepherd mix with the SOFTEST fur and a love for giving hugs! This girl is an absolute sweetheart!

❤️ Lil Ollie – A 4-year-old Papillon who was pretty frightened during transport. But the moment he arrived at his foster home, that scared little boy melted away and out came a happy, playful dog!

❤️ The Once Upon a Time Crew! – Six big, thick, chunky Aussie/Lab mix puppies who celebrated their 8-week birthday TODAY! What better birthday present than a fresh start?

❤️ Our Final Two Zoinks! – And THIS is the rescue story that means a little extra to us today.

Several weeks ago, we learned about five teenage Shepherd mixes running loose in a hollow where neighbors were threatening to shoot them.

We brought in an injured male from the property first. Last week, we were able to bring in the girls. And today, the final two boys made it safely into our care!

CASE CLOSED. ALL FIVE SAFE. ❤️

There is something incredibly rewarding about finally closing a case like this. But there's also a side of rescue that weighs heavily on our hearts.

When we know animals are in danger, the clock is ticking. We worry constantly about whether we can move fast enough to save them all. And when foster space is limited, sometimes we have no choice but to bring them in a few at a time.

Those days and weeks between rescues are HARD. We know they're still out there. We know the danger hasn't passed. And we know we're racing against time.

Stray Haven doesn't leave family behind. ❤️

And until we know every last one is safe, that responsibility stays with us.

Today, we can finally breathe a little easier knowing this entire family is out of harm's way. THIS is why foster homes are so incredibly important. Every open home gives us the ability to move faster when lives are on the line.

🏥 MEANWHILE, BACK AT THE VET...

While our transport team was busy bringing home new faces, Harrison Animal Hospital was hard at work helping another of our recent rescues.

Sweet Gloria, a young Beagle/Shepherd mix we pulled earlier this month, came to us with a pre-existing fracture in her back leg.

Today she underwent orthopedic surgery requiring external skeletal fixators to stabilize her leg and give her the best possible chance at a full recovery.

We're so grateful to the team at Harrison Animal Hospital for taking such wonderful care of our girl. Please keep Gloria in your thoughts as she begins her recovery! ❤️

✂️ AND TOMORROW? SURGERY DAY!

Because apparently we haven't been busy enough! 😂

Tomorrow we'll be getting 10 dogs and 12 cats spayed or neutered! That's another 22 animals taking an important step toward healthier futures.

Transport days, medical emergencies, surgeries, foster coordination, and the constant juggling act of finding room for just one more.

It's exhausting. It's emotional. And some days it's downright overwhelming.

But then we get a day like today. A day when the last two dogs from a dangerous situation finally make it to safety.

And we're reminded exactly why we keep going.

Thank you to our transport drivers, foster families, veterinary teams, rescue partners, and everyone who helps make these happy endings possible.
