IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL EQUINE CLIENTS

There is an ongoing Equine Herpesvirus 1(EHV-1) outbreak that stems from the World Championship Barrel Racing (WPRA) finals in Waco, Texas and the Barrel Futurities of America (BFA) race in Guthrie, Oklahoma. With many of these horses traveling across state lines, there have been reports of potential exposure in Nebraska and the surrounding states.

If your horse has traveled to either of these events, or if they have been in contact with any horses who were at these events you should isolate them away from other horses for the next 14 days.

The EHV outbreak is causing a specific and severe clinical manifestation called Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM). EHV is spread through direct contact between horses, shared equipment such as buckets and/or tack, contaminated trailers, aerosolized discharge from coughing/snorting, or from people who have handled exposed horses.

BIOSECURITY IS THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP.

If your horses have recently traveled anywhere, monitor for:
1. Nasal discharge
2. Toe-dragging/hind-end weakness and loss of balance
3. Lethargy
4. Fever above 101.5 F

If your horse has traveled and displays any of these signs, please contact our office. Until this outbreak is resolved, we suggest to stop all unnecessary travel of horses and to ensure your horse is up to date on its vaccinations.

More resources and information regarding outbreaks and biosecurity are available on the Equine Disease Communication Center's website at https://equinediseasecc.org/biosecurity
