This evening I had a discussion with a Resident about stray cats. I asked if they had plans for them. He replied they were looking at finding a farm for them. I offered to take to the Humane shelter. He told me he didn't want that. Not knowing I did volunteer work with the shelter, I inquired why. He commented that when the shelter gets full they euthanize.
To the citizens, businesses and governments in Dekalb county let me state we NEVER euthanize for this reason. The only time we do is for health reasons and when that is needed we always get a veterinarian opinion to warrant such drastic action. Again I emphasize we NEVER put an animal down except for health necessities.
It is obvious we have an incorrect understanding and perception of the Shelter, in public and with government officials. We publish all our required details on our website, Daily Facebook postings related to all topics involving the shelter, and we share with local news networks, radio stations and other information sites as we can. But we need to do more to get all of the county to understand what we do.
Our primary function is simple, we intake, process, update with meds, shots, chips as needed and rehome. Caring for the animals and finding them new homes is our #1 mission. Somewhere we have not fully shared that mission with all, so I hope we can get the word out about who we are, what we do and how you can help. We offer tours, we invite social groups, school groups and all others to visit, tour, volunteer.
Did you know we have a mobile Vet clinic coming on site once per month for spay and neuter needs, you sign up via their website, prepay and show, and it takes you less than an hour to complete this process. Did you know we foster animals, allowing those with short term problems to get care for their animals until you can return them to your family.
Did you know we have a program that you can take a cat or dog home for the day, run errands with you, go to the park, or anything you want and return them before the end of business day. This program is great for those that love animals yet can't take a pet full time. Great for you and great for the animal, they get out of the shelter for a day and the impact it has on them is a great site to see at the end of the day. Did you know we offer school children to come read to the animals, and we are starting a new program that musicians ( tenured and those learning ) can come play to the dogs because music soothes the savage beast.
Saturday Sept 6 we will be hosting our 50th anniversary party at the Auburn Outdoor theater on Center street. Live band, board members and shelter employees will be present to discuss any topics you want answers to, and if you have no questions just enjoy the live band. We welcome you to view our social media sites, come to the shelter and ask any questions you have. Again, our goal is to get animals off the street, fed and housed until we can find their forever home.
To all who volunteer, donate, and help with these programs, we couldn't do this without you, so thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
