🦒 While giraffes are the tallest land animals in the world, health challenges often begin at ground level. Imagine carrying 2,500 pounds of body weight on four feet the approximate size of dinner plates.

College of Veterinary Medicine Anatomy Lab Coordinator Ray Wilhite is part of a new collaborative study that may lead to improved hoof health and longer lifespans for the graceful giants in zoos and other managed environments.

Today marks the first day of classes on the CVM campus, but there's really no offseason for learning and professional development.

Four of our third-year students -- Brianna Paul-Kaplan, Colby Cheaney, Payton Tackett and Natalie Buonaiuto -- particpated in last week's Canine Health Foundation National Parent Club Canine Health Conference in Durham, N.C.

The students participated in discussions and connected with leaders in the field through a travel grant sponsored by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA).

The conference draws veterinarians, breeders, researchers and students from around the country for the purpose of sharing cutting-edge research and advancements in canine health and genetics. Attendees explored topics ranging from disease prevention and emerging treatments to innovations in breeding practices for healthier dogs.

🐶✂️ Nervous about trimming your dog’s nails? Follow the advice of Dr. Christopher Lea, associate clinical professor in our Department of Clinical Sciences, and other experts!

Dr. Lea recommends having two people involved: one to comfort the pup and one to clip (especially for squirmy four-legged friends). Key tips include:

▶ Use sharp clippers or a grinder

▶ Trim small amounts to avoid the quick

▶ Watch for a dark dot as a warning sign

▶ Keep styptic powder nearby just in case

Trimming your dog's nails can be daunting because there's always a possibility of cutting too close to the quick — here's how to do it safely.

While we’re officially welcoming our Class of 2029 to campus on Monday, 14 students got a head start on their first-year experience through the college’s Summer Anatomy Workshop, which ended on Friday, Aug. 1.

Hosted by the Department of Anatomy, Physiology & Pharmacology, the two-week workshop offers an introduction to anatomical structures, principles and terminology, and lays the foundation for more in-depth study during the fall semester. This year marked the largest cohort since the workshop launched nearly a decade ago.

We’re looking forward to welcoming all first-year students to orientation on Monday.

The week will include introductions to faculty and staff, hospital tours, vet school “survival” tips, and a Welcome to the Profession dinner.

🦅 The Auburn University Raptor Center will celebrate 25 years of pregame eagle flights during the upcoming Auburn football season.

Sustaining one of college football's favorite gameday traditions represents only a fraction of the center's mission. A unit of the College of Veterinary Medicine, the center treats more than 300 injured or ill raptors each year and conducts hundreds of educational
demonstrations.

For more than two decades, Auburn home football games have featured an iconic War Eagle soaring over the cheering stadium. All this summer and fall, The Auburn University Raptor Center celebrates the 25th anniversary of football’s most famous flight.
