We have made the hard decision to give up for the time being trying to find a new location. With everything in the area owned by greedy investors or already full, there's just nothing we can work with. Unfortunately this means we have about $45000 worth of food that will expire soon if we don't find ways to use it.
This along with the passing of our beloved Chupa who passed this month at the ripe old age of 18 lead us to want to find ways to give back. Chupa was dropped at the Animal Refuge League in Westbrook because he was "Dangerous" to the family that owned him. When we first got the call that they had a reactive dog in need of a foster home we visited, Chupa was interesting, he would snap at any attempt to touch him, out in the play area he would stand just out of reach and snap if we tried to touch him. We decided to take him home and work with him. Stephanie went back to pick him up.
She got him 10 feet out the door and she said he was a totally different dog. Happy, excited, and friendly. When I got home to meet him again he was very excited, just craving attention, and wanted to be as close as possible to anyone that would let him. At the time we lived on my families horse farm and we saw dozens to new people every day. Chupa took a few weeks to get used to the constant strangers until he realized these were just more friends that would pet and love him. He would come to work with me and was known as the door greeter, saying Hi to everyone that stopped in and getting excited when regulars stopped in with his favorite treats.
By the time we opened Scales and Tails, he was already 17 and the long days were just too much for him, but he came in a few Sundays for the shorter day and was so happy to see all kinds of new faces again.
Chupa will be missed by many, he was loved by all, and he is survived by his little brother (PITA as chupa thought of him) Redford.
