Spend time working for and learning from professionals who have proven training programs and whose horses consistently show the results of that program. Knowledge is power in this industry, and every trainer has their own approach. Every program has pieces that work extremely well, and the more you’re exposed to, the more tools you add to your toolbox.

That’s how good programs are developed. By continuing to learn and gather knowledge from others, you’re able to refine your own approach and keep improving the horses that come through your program.

Being exposed to different methods allows you to see a wider range of perspectives and understand why things are done a certain way. Not every method will fit your style, and that’s part of the process. Over time, patterns begin to emerge and you start to recognize a lot of great horsemen share very similar key qualities.

2️⃣ 𝐏𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 – proven and marketable.
3️⃣ 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 – strong bones, solid feet, and durability.

A top prospect isn’t just pretty on the outside... they’ve got to have the talent, heart, and foundation to handle the work.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘂𝗲...

One practice that I've found makes a huge difference is leaving horses tied for 30–60 minutes after riding.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝘆?... Because this gives them time to cool down, reflect on their training session, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘅 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗱. Which is just as important to learn as any maneuver I could teach them in the show pen. My program takes pride in making great horses, not just great show horses. This means we are focused on training horses that can step into an arena ready to perform, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 horses that, out of the arena, are safe and respectful in every situation.

Teaching them to stand quietly tied at home prepares them for the times they’ll be hauled to shows or new places, making those experiences more enjoyable for everyone.
