PREPARE YOUR DOG FOR
4 TH OF JULY FIREWORKS
The Fourth of July, weekend, is here and most of us are looking forward to the Fireworks that fill the night & enjoying it with friends and family. However, what we think is fun is not always fun for our dogs! Dogs are especially vulnerable because of their acute, sensitive hearing and enhanced sense of smell from the fireworks. This festive day can cause many dogs’ extreme distress.
Start now, thinking about how you can help your dog during this time
If you are not aware, each year on this Holiday, hundreds of dogs go missing because they are frightened of the unpredictable loud noises from firecrackers, whistles and even guns. They can injure themselves trying to escape the nose by digging out of yards, going through a screen door, jumping fences, etc.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO MAKE THIS A PET-FRIENDLY FOURTH OF JULY
* Do NOT take your dog to the fireworks display. Even calm dogs can be unsettled with all the noise.
* It is safer to keep your dogs at home during the celebrations (not in your yard, where he might escape).
* Make sure he is wearing his collar and ID tags ( microchipping is even a better choice).
* Create a safe place inside your home. Choose your most internal room, away from the windows.
* Crate your dog and cover the crate with a blanket to help block out the flashing lights/sounds.
* Place your crate behind a sofa where he can feel safer and even more comfortable.
* Close all curtains and blinds to reduce the flashes.
* Play soothing music or turn on the TV to mask some of the scary booms/ bangs/pops.
* Take your dog out to go potty BEFORE the fireworks start –ON LEASH.
* Make sure your dog stays hydrated and cool.
* Feed your dog a small meal, before the event, this may encourage him to rest.
* Occupy them with food-filled toys or a frozen stuffed Kong. Spray Cheese is a great treat.
* Dogs like to be near their owners when stressed, so if you have to be away from home that evening. Give some thought to bringing your dog to Jungle Camp Pet Resort, where we always play soft music and will be here to comfort your dog during this scary time.
* If you are staying home and entertaining friends/family with a BBQ, do not get tempted to give scraps from the grill this can cause an upset stomach. Remember foods like onion, avocado, grapes, raisins can be toxic.
* Comfort your dog if that makes them feel safer and more comfortable.
Let’s name this date. DOGGIE INDEPENDENCE DAY: We can celebrate the rights and freedoms that should be given to all dogs. The right to have a loving home, the right to nutritious food and clean water, and good daily health. The right to Positive Reward Based training for manners and the right to be spayed or neutered to help control doggie over population. We should dress our dogs up in Red, White & Blue to support fair treatment of ALL dogs!
