So stupidly proud of River who attempted her NW2 trial yesterday and, if I had fully trusted my training and held my anxiety in check to better support her, would have been successful because she was a rockstar. I have a lot of important lessons to work through and have way more confidence that we can get it next time but the tip is to NEVER LET YOUR ANXIETY GET IN THE WAY OF CELEBRATING YOUR DOG! Even though I false alerted in 2 of the elements, we still had a “party” after each element because it is River’s most favorite game on the planet and I did not want to, in any way, negatively affect that! She did nothing wrong. I didn’t read what she was telling me and called the wrong thing. So what 🤷‍♀️ it’s a game she loves and she had a blast. I’ll learn and improve so we get it next time. Whatever you are doing with your dog, let them enjoy it and have their wins, then take the mistakes and figure out how not to repeat it. Your dog is only as good as your training and ability to stay level headed when the training is challenged. Remember that and you’ll get better through each challenge you face!!!

Remember to top up your dogs mental reserves after doing the hard stuff by giving them something super easy to do and get paid well for! It will help keep your dog engaged for more training and stop them from getting burned out.

It’s almost time for the big firework events! You may think that 6 weeks is a long time, but there’s a lot of training that needs to be done in order to help your pups feel more at ease with the scary noises!! Start now and you’ll be in a much better place when the celebrations start.

Work with the dog you have not the dog you wish you had. By that I mean to train to the level that your dog needs to be trained to, some NEED more training to be mentally and emotionally balanced while others just need enough training to be safe with you.

Set yourselves up for success and advocate for your dog when you’re out and enjoying a moment of relaxation. Keep your dogs tucked in close and don’t tie off the leash to a chair/table.

Let’s talk about leashes!

Create an auto-sit and auto-lay when out on walks with your pups.

I have a challenge for you all!! And I really want to hear how it goes - be honest with yourself as to how well you stuck to the challenge!!!

A bit of a long one today! I had some experiences this weekend which reminded me that spring is here and there are a lot more families spending time in places where we like to go on hikes and walks. These places have been quiet over the winter which means we have been able to be much more relaxed with our walks, but now we have to start thinking about shorter leashes, heel walks, switching sides with our dogs and being very present in our walk. This is where you have to work in earnest at heel, switch and not allowing your dogs to say hello to everyone and everything that you encounter. It’s a difficult shift for a lot of us, but a necessary one for us to still be able to enjoy our walks.

Get back into the swing of leash walking by practicing in your yard or driveway before heading out. Creat the connection with your dog before leaving the house and you stand a much better chance of having a great walk together!
