Some tips for you, your dog, and fireworks:
- Turn up the noise. Turn up the TV, the radio, your wireless speakers, whatever you have to bring noise into the house. More noise inside will help cover the noise of the fireworks outside.
- Leave the lights on. More light inside will help disguise the flashes from the fireworks outside.
- YOU stay calm. Your dog will notice if you are calm or freaking out. Don't yell at the neighbor every time they shoot a firework, show your dog that there is nothing to worry about.
- Talk to your dog in your normal conversation voice. Not mad, aggravated, scared, or even the cutesy baby squishy face voice (they know that's not normal either, unless that is how you always talk to your dog). Your dog can tell your mood from your voice, so speak normally like there is no danger or excitement.
- If your dog likes to go hide somewhere, let them hide. As long as their hiding spot is safe for them to be in, let them. Forcing them to come out and sit with you will not make it better.
- Let your dogs out early, before dark. The risk of having to clean up a mess because your dog may have to wait longer to go out again is way more manageable than the risk of a firework going off while you're trying to sneak in one more potty break and your dog running off.
Every holiday with fireworks you will see people on social media blasting anything that celebrates in a manner they don't see fit. We all know these days come every year. They are going to continue to come no matter who you yell at. Being prepared for them to come is the best course of action. We all love the fireworks until it messes with our animals. But if we prepare for the fireworks, we can all enjoy them.
Everyone have a safe, and fun 4th!
