Canine CellMates is a program that we believe will have a large ripple effect on our community. For the dogs that are pulled from Fulton County Animal Control, they will be socialized, trained and adopted into loving homes, when they were facing almost certain euthanasia at the shelter. For the inmate handlers, they are given the opportunity to exhibit responsibility and accountability with measur

able goals to attain. They have the opportunity to experience positive physical contact and unconditional love. They learn skills that may enable them to more successfully re-enter the workplace, and a confidence to do so based on the successes they have experienced in this program. They have the opportunity to interact with people that are outside their normal circle of influence, and learn and grow socially. Through these people, both volunteers and speakers, they are able to expand their dreams to include possibilities they had not conceived of before. This program allows these men to grow into better people— less likely to re-offend, and more likely to become better citizens of our community, better children to their parents, and better parents to their children. Our involvement with the handlers doesn't stop when they get released. If they have given us 100% when they are in the program, we then assist them in their search for jobs and housing, help with furnishings, food and transportation, and continue to support them while they strive to become the men we know they can be.

Our sweet little guy, Queso, isn’t feeling so great. 😞

After a vet visit, exam, and some X-rays, we found out he’s got bronchitis. Poor baby! He’s now on antibiotics, cough tablets, and steroids — and we’re hopeful he’ll be back to his happy, spunky self soon.

Unfortunately, vet care can be expensive, and this visit (exam, X-rays, and meds) came to $571. If you’d like to help us cover this unexpected cost, we’d be so grateful — Queso is absolutely worth every penny.

Did you know today is National Croc Day? Well, word must’ve made its way to Zuko — and he’s all in!

Crocs first hit the scene back in 2002 in Boulder, Colorado, when their creators set out to make the perfect foam boating shoe. Fast forward a couple of decades, and now everyone from Justin Bieber to LeBron James is rocking them. Naturally, Zuko had to see what all the hype was about!

Now he’s wondering… who wears them better — him or his stylish friend?

If you’re looking for a bestie who’s always up for a laugh, loves trying new things, and doesn’t take himself too seriously, this blockheaded low rider might just be your guy.

Zuko’s ready to be your fun-loving, trendsetting sidekick. Want to meet him? Start with an adoption application at caninecellmates.org!

A couple of weeks ago, we shared that a new class of Beyond The Bars had just begun — and that we could use a little help with supplies. One of those needs was dog food, and some of you answered the call!

Thank you so much to those who sent food — our dogs are very happy and well-fed because of you! Unfortunately, the Amazon boxes didn’t include gift slips, so we don’t know exactly who to thank. 😞

Also, one bag of food that was sent arrived open and leaking, so Amazon returned it to sender before it reached us, and we don't have the ability to request that it be replaced. If that was your order, could you please reach out or resend a replacement? Our hungry pups would be so grateful!

Thank you all for your continued support — it truly takes a village to feed (and love) these dogs! 🐶💕

Training is in full swing for Beyond The Bars Class 9 — both for the men and the dogs!

During these first few weeks, the dogs begin learning the foundational cues — things like Look, Touch, Sit, and Down. Every more advanced skill they’ll master later starts right here!

And just like people, every dog learns at their own pace. Some are eager for more, ready to soak up new lessons quickly. Others need a little extra time… and maybe a few snuggles along the way. 🥰

We’re so proud of the hard work and progress from every man and every dog in this class — they’re truly learning and growing together!

What an incredible day to be out in the community! 💙

On Saturday, October 5th, Canine CellMates was proud to take part in the 3rd Westside Stride — a celebration of the amazing people, organizations, and energy that make Atlanta’s Westside so special.

Our team — joined by a few of our favorite furry ambassadors — hit the streets to share the mission of our Beyond The Bars program, where program participants and rescue dogs work together toward healing, growth, and second chances.

Watson, one of our proud program graduates, took his role as head of the welcoming committee very seriously (and with tail held high!), while Honey, a current program dog, made it her personal mission to hand out as many kisses as humanly — or should we say dogly — possible! 💋🐶

We’re always honored to stand alongside our neighbors and community partners, showing how connection and compassion truly can change lives — both human and canine.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello, learn more, or simply show love and support. ❤️

And now… time to meet the 4th — and final — dog of Beyond The Bars Class 9!

Meet Taco, known as Tax at the shelter. This handsome young Doberman was picked up as a stray, but we’re pretty sure he’s exactly where he’s meant to be now.

Taco is under 18 months old, still filling out, and full of puppy energy. He’s silly, goofy, and has the attention span of a gnat 🤪— but when he focuses, this boy is so smart! He’s already learning his obedience cues like a champ.

Everyone loves this sweet goofball, and we couldn’t be happier to have him rounding out this fun and diverse group of dogs in Class 9!

Thank you for coming for the introductions of this class - now please stay with us for the updates of how they are progressing!

We’re on a roll — ready to meet the third dog of Beyond The Bars Class 9?!

Keeping with the food theme, say hello to Honey (known as “Elegance” at the shelter)! This big, beautiful girl is an XL American Bully with a heart as sweet as her name.

Honey was picked up as a stray on school grounds — maybe she was just trying to further her education 😉 or maybe she was simply searching for someone who would finally love her for who she is. Sadly, Honey was used for breeding and likely had at least four litters before being discarded when she was no longer considered “profitable.”

Now, at around 4–5 years old and 95 pounds of pure sweetness, Honey is ready for a new chapter — one filled with love, play, learning, and all the treats she can handle.

We’re so happy to have her in our program — not only because of her affectionate nature (and endless wet kisses 💋), but also because she helps the men in our program understand what true compassion and respect for animals look like.

Welcome, Honey — you’re right where you belong.

You’ve met the first dog of Beyond The Bars Class 9 — ready to meet the next one???

Sticking with the food theme, say hello to the adorable Kiwi! 🥝

If Kiwi looks familiar to some of our longtime supporters, there’s a reason — she’s a Beyond The Bars alum! She was part of our in-custody program back in 2019. She was found running along a highway and brought to Fulton County Animal Services, she’s come full circle and found her way back to us. Her previous adopter wasn’t able to reclaim her, but that’s all behind her now — and we’re thrilled to welcome her back!

Kiwi is now 7 years old, a petite boxer mix who weighs just 38 pounds — and truly, she’s as close to perfect as a dog can get. She’s incredibly smart (and already remembering her obedience cues from six years ago!), affectionate, and loves everyone she meets. She does the cutest zoomies in the yard, romps around with her toys, and then curls up for a cozy nap.

Seriously, this girl is absolute perfection — and those ears deserve their own spotlight! 💕

We can’t wait to see what her handlers will teach her this time around — stay tuned for updates from this special reunion story!

It’s that time — when you finally get to meet the new dogs of Beyond The Bars Class 9! 🎉🐾

First things first: yes, we name our dogs in themes — and this time, the men of Class 9 picked Food as their theme. How perfect is that?

So, let’s start things off with Queso (formerly known as Little Man)! This little guy’s journey began when he was literally dropped off on our sidewalk in a crate. We made sure he got safely to Fulton County Animal Services for intake and his stray hold — but by the end of those seven days, we were all smitten. Queso’s spunky energy and charm made him the very first dog of Class 9!

Queso is about 20 months old, weighs in at a mighty 10 pounds, and might be a chihuahua/shih tzu mix — but that’s anyone’s guess. He takes a minute to warm up, but once he does, he’s loyal for life. Every trip outside is an adventure for him — full speed ahead, with his little ears flapping in the breeze!

This pint-sized powerhouse has already captured the hearts of everyone in the program — men and staff alike — with his big personality and endless tail wags. We can’t wait to see what Queso and his handlers accomplish together!

The first two weeks of Class 9 are beyond us now, and the training has begun. We need to introduce you to the new class of dogs, but first - we could use some help from you!

As we move into the training portion of Class 9 of Beyond The Bars, we could really use your help! We’re most in need of:

🥣 dog food (for training and mealtime)
🎒 training pouches (so the men can keep treats handy during sessions)

These items are a huge part of helping our dogs stay healthy, learn, build trust, and succeed in the program.

If you’d like to support this new group of men and dogs, donations of dog food or training pouches would make a world of difference! You can drop them off at 981 Howell Mill Road, Atlanta or order directly from our Amazon or Chewy wish lists:

As Beyond The Bars Class 9 wrapped up bonding week — the time when participants meet and begin connecting with the dogs they’ll be working with — we took them on a powerful field trip.

We visited Fulton County Animal Services, the shelter where many of our program dogs come from. While the new facility is a huge improvement over the old one, it still houses far more dogs than it was built for — 437 on the day we visited. Dogs there live in cramped runs or cages, surrounded by noise, fear, and stress. None of them have the power to change their situation. Only people can.

We believe it’s important for the men in our program to see this firsthand. To feel the overwhelm, the sadness, and the reality of how dogs end up in shelters. To recognize the resilience of the dogs they’re working with. And — most importantly — to begin to understand their own role in building a world where fewer dogs end up behind bars.

After our visit, we sat down to process what they had seen. Here are the words Class 9 used to describe the experience:

“stress …disturbed … pain … overwhelming … heartbreaking … depressed … anxiety … fear … angry … lonliness … desperation … intake … prison"

Yes, all of that. And the lesson we hope they take with them is simple: you can’t help by turning your head. Change begins when you choose to see.

One of our favorite days just happened last week — the dogs met the participants of our newest Beyond The Bars class - Class 9! 🐾💙

It’s always so moving to watch those first moments: the excitement, the curiosity, the gentle sniffing, and then the beginning of something beautiful — trust and love.

This week is what we call bonding week — time set aside for the men and dogs to simply be together, get comfortable, and start building the connection that will carry them into training.

The magic is just beginning… stay tuned for more! ✨
