Confinement is a fact of your dog's life. They must have some form of containment at some point in their life.

It's not cruel or stressful if you do it well.

There are many forms of containment you can use, and finding what's best for your dog is important. How you introduce confinement is key. These should be appropriately sized, introduced, and utilized.

Feeding your dog in a crate, pen, bathroom, laundry room, or other space with the door open is a great, easy starting point. We want them to have positive experiences from the start.

Ideally, starting puppies off with this concept can mean a happy life of containment as needed while a baby then allows more freedom.

Ahsoka, pictured here, is only 2 years old. We do not trust her when home alone. To keep her safe and her siblings from being annoyed with crate her or put her in this play pen, we lovingly call "the apartment."

Our two boys, Norby and Panzer, are trustworthy loose in the house but not in the same room together. So they get more space in confinement.

How does your dog do with confinement? How do you feel about the use of confinement? Is this something you'd like help working on?

If you have a dog who sometimes pulls when you need to use a slip lead, such as at Fast Cat or Barn Hunt, you can make a harness to reduce the pulling and be easier on their delicate neck.

It's not something we recommend as a long-term solution, but it's definitely a situational helper.

Puppies need things to put their mouth on other than your skin and clothes. A fleece tug is a great option to gently play some tug.

Bringing a fleece tug out for special play times is a smart idea when you predict your puppy might feel naughty.

To get help raising your puppy, please join our upcoming group class starting on Tuesday, March 18, at 5:30 pm at our Lawrenceville campus.

Socialization you can do at home with different surfaces. Amy put some items out for her puppy class to explore. These are simple and yet complex.

We like to let the puppy check them out with low pressure. The goal is happy feelings. Every positive experience is one they can add to their library of information throughout their life.

To do this at home, find items like a tarp, a ladder, a kids' tunnel, and a cardboard box flattened out. Then let your puppy check them out. You can reward them with kibble or treats for being brave.

Have you tried to apply training tools or techniques that just don't seem to work?

That's because you and your dog are unique individuals.

Our approach at Canine Country Academy is to understand the dog and person in front of us and provide what we believe to be the best education, skills, and tools to achieve success.

We loved getting to work with this 5 month old Shiba that fit with the breed, the personality, and the needs of the team.

If you need a unique approach, we are here for you.

My Story

My name is Amy! I've spent my entire life learning about how animals learn and see the world. I began studying dogs more in depth in my junior year of high school with a goal to work with more problematic dogs. I spent close to three years shadowing professional instructors and training with my own dogs to practice. In April of 2014, I completed the Dog Trainer Foundations course at Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training and Behavior. In August 2016, I became certified through Petco Positive Dog Training and the American Kennel Club as a Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. This is when I found my love of working with Therapy and Assistance Dogs for the disabled and left my work with Aggression behind me. Since then, I have become dedicated to showing people what incredible things dogs can really do if you set them up for success. In mid 2019, I took that desire to show off dogs' smarts a step further and dove into AKC Trick Dog. From a simple bow to pushing a shopping cart on hind legs, I've met some dogs who can learn to do some show stopping things! The tricks are great, but what really makes me smile is seeing how happy the dog is to work with their human. it's all about that bond! I believe in a solid foundation of positive reinforcement and lots of love. Any boundaries or corrections should be fair and well understood by the dog. Most importantly, your DOG gets to pick what is reinforcing and what is punishing. YOU don't! We use what makes your dog tick and take advantage! This helps us to harness their true enthusiasm to work and keep the focus on us! The results of real communication are truly astounding! I’m hoping one day, I may get a chance to show you just how smart your dog can be, too.
