Knowledge is Power

A new study published in the Cadillac of all journals, Nature, analyzed 32 dry & canned pet food products from the United States, (93 in total worldwide) and revealed a widespread presence of toxic metals, including chromium (Cr), mercury (Hg), & arsenic (As), across various brands. Notably, lead (Pb) levels were the highest overall, with some samples exceeding established regulatory safety limits.

Exposure to lead in dogs can have negative effects on the gastrointestinal tract, nervous system, cardiovascular system, and blood. Cadmium is known for its cumulative toxicity and can induce cancer in animals through various mechanisms, and exposure to it can cause nephrotoxicity and damage to the small intestine. These heavy metals found in pet food place added stress on key organs, especially the kidneys, which are responsible for filtering toxins from the body. Over time, that toxic burden can contribute to kidney dysfunction and disease. 😿

So what can you do?

One simple way to support detox is chlorella🦠— a green algae known for its ability to bind heavy metals in the gut and support gentle detoxification. It’s not a cure-all, but it can be a helpful part of your toolkit. (Be sure to use a clean, third-party tested brand.)

Learn why titers are better than vaccinating

NOT SURE IF YOUR PET NEEDS SHOTS? ALWAYS TITER YOUR PET FIRST BEFORE OVER-VACCINATING!

“Vaccinosis, the name for the chronic disease, is caused by continued use of vaccines. These symptoms mimic the original disease in parts.

Vaccines have achieved many important benefits for companion animals, however, after spending many years monitoring the results of vaccinosis, those in the animal healthcare field now have a duty to re-examine and improve the current vaccine protocols for the health and safety of their patients. This is especially true for animals with compromised immune systems, since vaccines represent one more stressor that could prove to be the tipping point between health and disease.

Side effects from dog vaccinations can occur anywhere from instantly up to several weeks or months later. Vaccines can even cause susceptibility to chronic diseases that appear much later in a dog’s life." - Dr. Jean Dodds, world-renowned veterinarian immunologist

TITER TEST:

A titer test (pronounced tight-errr) is a laboratory or in-house veterinary test measuring the existence and level of antibodies (necessary to fight off disease) in your pet’s blood. Basically, it’s a test that will tell you whether or not you actually need to vaccinate your pet.

It’s also super useful when making a decision about vaccinating a pet with an unknown vaccination history, or for determining if pets have received immunity from vaccination.

Knowledge is power! Before you think you’re feeding good quality dog food, think again. Look who owns them 🤯

Knowledge is power! Before you think you’re feeding good quality dog food, think again. Look who owns them 🤯

Top Dogs family: The graphic below shows you which major corporate conglomerates own popular big box and grocery store brands of pet food. Look at their revenue. Why is this important to you?
The pet food companies typically use the same ingredient and vitamin mix supplier across all the companies. If one ingredient is toxic and used across multiple companies, several pet foods may have been impacted and result in many pets sick across many pet foods.
This happened during the melamine scare in 2006 as well the Vitamin D toxicity debacle in 2019. In that case it started with the Hills recall (which killed thousands of dogs) and then resulted in several other companies recalling their food because an employee put too much Vitamin D in the premix.
Also, the FDA does not require pet food manufacturers to list where they get their ingredients from. They also do not require them to disclose when they change their ingredients or packaging.
Connecting the dots for you. Do your research! When we know better, we do better.

Top Dogs does not stock any of the following brands. If you are feeding one of these and would like to try something different, please stop by and see us! We will be happy to show you some healthier options for your pets.🙂

NO UNWANTED LITTERS, we all agree with that goal; it's the surgical technique that should be reevaluated. Hysterectomy and vasectomy can be performed as early as 8 weeks of age with no negative side effects, rendering dogs sterile AND hormonally balanced.

Why do pets get boosters every year?💉

The ultimate goal of antibody titer testing is to move towards a more personalized approach to pet care—one that respects the individuality of each animal and makes medical decisions based on data, not tradition or medical habits. By utilizing vaccine antibody titers, pet owners can ensure their pets are protected without unnecessary boosters, aligning with the principle of “first, do no harm.”
