New York Judge Rules Pet Dogs are "Family," Not Just Property

In a landmark decision, a Brooklyn judge has essentially redefined the legal status of pet dogs, ruling them as family members rather than just property. This ruling stemmed from a case involving Duke, a 4-year old dachshund who was tragically killed by a negligent driver.

Justice Aaron Maslow's ruling signifies that the bond between a pet dog and its family can be strong enough to merit emotional distress compensation. This recognition holds considerable importance beyond just money - It sets a precedent for how society views and treats the animals with whom we share our lives. Hopefully, this ruling is just the beginning of a broader redefinition of what "family" truly encompasses.
