Not much news on the strawberry front - I harvested a pound off the 600 plants over the weekend, and love y’all, but unless production steps up I’m just going to eat them myself. But there are other exciting things happening while the fields are sluggish.

1- after 5 years of working on the soil here, I have my first nematode sightings! This guy is a root feeder, though I watched him chowing down on organic matter on the microscope slide for 10 min or so. I wish I could have gotten video - this is a snap from my cell phone through the eye piece.

2- the well is one step closer to irrigating the fields! I poured the pad Sunday evening, I'll trench for electrical this weekend and hopefully dig pipes in the weekend after.

3 - still finding lots of fun critters - this little guy was on some greens I was picking for the buns and he graciously posed for a photo before I relocated him to an adjacent yellow dock

4- Bitsy is a couple days out from giving birth, and apparently decided that her greens would serve a higher purpose in her nest box. She has straw in there, but πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ. I'm super excited to bring her and River into my rabbitry - they're both from in NC and they are gorgeous!

5- I can neither confirm nor deny plots for a mushroom fairy tractor... Kinda love the idea of a giant mushroom mowing, moving mulch and getting work done on the property, though, not gonna lie πŸ˜‚

I was not expecting that planting on plastic would speed up our first strawberries by 3+ weeks! Not sure what this means for picking - we still only have about 600 plants and they're still smaller than I'd like to see. I'm going to pick tomorrow and get a sense for whether the berries also ripen faster on plastic. And then I'll decide from there - maybe we can manage 1-2 groups 2-3 times a week. Since the website is down and I'm awaiting the arrival of a new computer, stay turned to social media!

This little man chose me as his human in the weeks before I graduated from college, and he's turning 17 next week! He's outlived my public health career, several relationships, his wingman younger brother Blake, multiple homes, two rounds of organ failure, nerve damage in his back leg, the loss of his hearing and a chunk of his eyesight, and as of last week the removal of 20 teeth. The vet and I had been discussing a dental for years, but he never showed any sign of pain or decreased interest in food, so we held off rather than put him under. This dog had a dental abscess and still happily scarfed down whatever I put in front of him and asked for more! πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

I've informed him that he's now required to live at least as many years as the number of teeth he's lost.

Happy birthday, my little Ty bean. I'll never know what you saw in me on the day you climbed into my lap at 8 months old and claimed me as your human, but I'm damn glad you did. I'm going to do my best to make sure you have a place to hang outside, bark at the clouds, nap in the shade and munch on quail, liver, eggs, kibble, and (in moderation) whatever else your heart desires. ❀️

That's right, my farm exists entirely for my dog. πŸ˜‚ Eh, dogs, I can't imagine Luna doing well in a normal house with a yard either. πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

Gotta be honest, folks, I don't know if we're going to have a season this year. There's about 600 strawberry plants in the field; normally I run with 6000. I'm starting flowers in hopes of hitting mothers day weekend with a flower and strawberry u-pick, but it's gonna be tight. I may have to sit this one out and try again next year. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather, and I'll keep you in the loop. If only all flowers were as easy as the daffodils that have naturalized around the neighborhood...

I'm tentatively declaring my experiment with strawberry tips to be successful. It looks like I'll have about an 80% success rate to transplant, and we'll see how they survive the transition to the field and how they produce next spring. I can definitely tell where my misting system shifted while I was traveling in early November - the plants that didn't get enough water while I was gone have much less developed root systems (slide 2). All said, I don't love how these look but 1000 plants is better than nothing, and I'll have plenty of flowers as well. That's right - thanks to neopestalotiopsis, Ecosystem Farm is going to be u-pick strawberries and flowers next year!

So much love to for letting me borrow the plastic mulch layer, for connecting me with Paul, for coming out to help last minute, for covering Chris' time and .agriculture.hq for understanding that farming sometimes bleeds into work hours despite my best efforts! Farming is truly a community effort, and we fortunately beat the weather this time πŸ˜…

I'm hopeful that the plastic mulch will keep the w**ds under control this year, and we'll see a great crop of strawberries and flowers come spring. 🀞🏼

Rickety? 100% But it works, and it only needs to work for 10 days. Next Saturday and Sunday I'll be harvesting strawberry tips and planting them out in trays. They'll spend 10 days under mist growing roots and then another few weeks growing into plugs that will go into the field on November 16th and 17th. Anyone want to come help? Hit me up.

This would be the downside of tillage, but I knew I was running this risk to try to get ahead of the w**ds during this off season... I'll have some work to do once it all dries out, but it's repairable and I'm thrilled that no trees came down and my greenhouse is intact! We got over 12" of rain, and it looks like the creek topped out about 2 feet below overflowing. All of which makes me feel very good about the longevity of this spot if we can keep the stream buffer intact.

If the roofing panels fly out from under the tractor, I've got bigger problems than this storm... Stay safe, y'all ❀️

I had a random squash volunteer in my personal garden this year... 27 butternut squash later, I'll definitely be saving some seed from the first few that set fruit! This thing took over about 500 square feet, got no surplus water or nutrients, got hacked back from my tomatoes several times and produced despite being covered with vine borers and squash beetles 😳

Also shown - sweet fall squash, honeynut, delicata, trombocino, Ty beast, Luna, and a random watermelon. Not shown - 6 butternut that I ate and gifted before it occurred to me to take a picture.

There are no absolutes, only real and messy situations. I'm breaking one of the fundamental rules of regenerative this year, which is to leave the soil covered. I'm doing it because after four years of trying, I can't figure out how to get ahead of the w**ds and I need to knock back the w**d seed bank before I can use plastic mulch.

From an academic perspective, it'll be fascinating to see what soil with 23% organic matter and a 12 Haney score looks like after four months of tilling or flame w**ding anything green that appears in my field. But I can't afford another year of low yields, so I'm looking at this like a cancer treatment and listening to the people who have raised strawberries organically in my region for years. And I'm looking forward to coming years, when I can repopulate my soils with billions of diverse organisms and weave together a combination of regenerative and organic practices into a healthy and profitable farm.

Farm magic moment... I found this lady in the greenhouse at dusk, and was able to grab her from a corner. She sat in my hand for a few moments, her tiny claws gripping my finger as I admired her beauty and let her rest. I asked if she wanted some sugar water and maybe an overnight stay as the sky grew darker, and she responded by taking flight into the fading light. I hope she found a safe place to sleep and had enough energy to get to a flower this morning ❀️

I love when random connections result in collaboration! A few weeks ago I bought some metal roofing panels off FB Marketplace and the guy selling turned out to be the co-owner of . We got to talking shop, and next thing I know I've got a bag of roach frass in my mailbox! We're gonna explore whether this waste product from their bug production might be of value to farmers as an amendment or compost ingredient. My first microscope pass wasn't using great technique, but I think I'm seeing some beneficial fungi and a germinated seed, which bodes well 🀞🏼

Ok, there's still some fruit out in the field after the heat. We're going to open 9-10am on Tuesday-Thursday, and then that will be it for the season. So if you want strawberries this year, this is your last chance. Link in bio, make an appointment and come out this week!

This probably signals the end of our strawberry season - I'll be trying to support the plants to keep them from dropping blossoms, but 96 is gonna be a challenge. This means that we basically have the fruit that's already set left to ripen and then we'll close down until next spring. We have limited morning appointments available this week, *maybe* next, and that'll be it. So grab your strawberries while you can!
