Hawkeye ~ 7/20/2007 - 12/6/2020
These are always the hardest posts to make, especially when it's a dog that holds a special place in my heart, and the hearts of so many others.
Hawkeye peacefully crossed over to the bridge on 12/6/20 with Heather and Brian by his side. He had suffered a stroke earlier in 2020 and was dealing with some other underlying medical conditions when his body finally decided it was time. We are so fortunate as humans to be able to make the decision for these animals that love us unconditionally to pass with dignity and with those who love them the most right there with them. ❤️
Hawkeye debuted in flyball in August 2008 and would continue to be a rock solid member of both NASDOG and All Fired Up until his retirement in 2018. During his racing career he earned over 41,000 NAFA points and his Iron Dog award for racing 10 consecutive years.
Hawkeye was an awesome flyball dog and he and Brian were a force to be reckoned with in the lanes. There was nothing better than Hawkeye running start and staring at the judge waiting for him/her to drop their hands to start the race and hearing Brian's famous "growl" as he revved up Hawkeye and sent him down the lanes! I don't know if any of us will ever know exactly what Brian was saying... but Hawkeye sure knew and he'd sink right down into the mats and get ready to race. He was also great in the pack and would "judge" when to take off based upon where the dog in front of him was... which was pretty awesome... but a bit scary if we "wide" passed and he was airborne 5 feet before the start line! lol
Hawkeye was one of those dogs that once he was up and racing, he could run for anyone, in any position in the line up, pass into anything big or small, take a pass by the biggest of dogs (yes, that's you Wrecker), work with greenies (handlers and dogs), and it would never phase him a bit. He was all about racing and running FAST!
Hawkeye wasn't just a flyball dog either. Over the years he dabbled in all sorts of sports - herding, flyball, agility, disc, tricks, etc. He was also a great houseguest and 'babysitter' for some of my own dogs. He was great with puppies and up - he loved them all and was the sweetest dog you'd ever meet. He was also Brian's constant companion and while he would run for his Mom (or anyone) if asked to, he clearly loved nothing more than working for his Dad, Brian.
He will be missed terribly by his teammates and everyone that had the pleasure of knowing him. ❤️
