🐾 Why Does Winter Worsen Osteoarthritis in Dogs? 🐾

As the temperatures drop, dogs with osteoarthritis may experience more discomfort and stiffness. Here’s why—and how you can help them stay comfortable this winter:

🧊 Why Winter Makes It Harder for Arthritic Dogs:
• Cold Weather Increases Stiffness: Lower temperatures can reduce joint flexibility, making movement more painful.
• Decreased Activity Levels: Dogs may move less in cold weather, which can lead to muscle weakening and more joint strain.
• Barometric Pressure Changes: Fluctuations in atmospheric pressure during the season may intensify joint pain.
• Harder Surfaces: Snow and ice-covered ground provide less cushioning, which can aggravate joints.

💡 Tips for Managing Your Dog’s Arthritis in Winter:
• Warm, Comfortable Bedding: Provide a cozy, heated or orthopedic bed to keep joints warm and supported.
• Indoor Exercise: Encourage gentle activities like walking on carpets or playing indoors to keep your dog moving.
• Joint Supplements: Consider glucosamine, chondroitin, or omega-3 supplements (consult your vet first).
• Regular Vet Check-Ups: Your vet may recommend pain medications or other treatments to manage discomfort.
• Massage and Physical Therapy: Gentle massages or professional physical therapy can improve circulation and mobility.
• Winter Gear: Use dog sweaters or coats to keep your pup warm and protect joints during outdoor walks.
• Traction Aids: Use rugs or non-slip mats indoors and booties or paw balm outdoors to improve grip.
