This is "MaineSpirit Stoney Baloney" our resident polydactyl. I'm so proud of him and love to show him off because he is quite a rare specimen with 25 toes! Normal cats have 18 toes. True Maine C***s, traditional, from Maine, old fashioned giant barn cats were polydactyl. They were often called "snowshoe cats" or "mitten cats". The extra toes are a mutation to adapt to the snowy climate of Maine and act as "snowshoes". Polydactyl Maine C***s are very rare now as this gene was bred out of the breed. Because the extra toes are considered a mutation from normal by the cat registries they are disqualified from the show ring, therefore most show lines do not have polydactyls. I am working to preserve this rare and fascinating gene and true native Maine bloodlines.

Stoney was born 1/1/19, a New Year's baby! He is HUGE for his age and we can anticipate he will tip the scales at 20-25 lbs at full maturity in 2-3 years. 🐾
