“Crystallized Cedrol”

Species:
“Aromatic cedar”/“Eastern Red Cedar”:

… Being a big fan of working with Eastern Red Cedar, sometimes you will find a white crystallization that will build up on the surface when it’s stored or used and conditions warrant. This white dusty substance is called “Crystalized Cedrol”… which is a component of the “aromatic” oil resins naturally present in the wood itself. What happens is the cedar “sap” rises to the surface and solidifies in the form you visibly see as a white crystalline dust with “air” contact.

Cedar contains natural oils rich in phenolic compounds that disrupt sensory perception with insects so they avoid. Cedar also contains thujaplicins & thujone that are natural fungicide and insecticide repellents.
Insects that are repelled consist of: moths/beetles/cockroaches/termites/mosquitos/ants. Cedar is a “chemical free” natural use product.

This is how I bonded a stone vessel sink to a maple top using clear gloss epoxy. I’ve tried several different methods of applying heat with projects like this, I’m comfortable with a #6 brazing tip mapp gas torch from a distance to remove air pockets from the epoxy, while remembering that it’s just liquid plastic & will burn.. This was also an approx 4 hour time that I did in an evening to complete.. most of the time was babysitting the knot areas as that is where most air is generated.

🌟Pro-tip: Know exactly where your cats are before you start and make sure they are fed heavily for the first 24 hours while the epoxy sets up.. Hangry black cats create problems! 🐈‍⬛ (my first epoxy workbench has paw prints imbedded in the top! lol!)

We will have a spread for small container gardening tomorrow.. . all of our containers are put together with 100% eastern red cedar, & double coated spar urethane. Meaning at the end of the season you dump our containers out & then store it for repeated seasons.
